AT WHAT AGE DO PREDESTINED CALAMITIES STRIKE?
Answer: In general, we experience predestined hardships or even calamities when the last digit of our age ends with a 3, 6 or 9. For example, when we reach 19, 29, 33, 39, 49, 59, 66, 73, 89, and etc. People also experience predestined calamities at age 84.
Conditions vary for each individual, and therefore this cannot be generalised. However, we should be extra cautious at the ages mentioned above. All ages are calculated according to the Gregorian calendar. For example, if you were born on 1 January 1993, then you turn 19 on 1 January 2012.

AGES WITH PREDESTINED CALAMITIES
Question: Other than when the last digit of our age ends with a 3, 6 or 9, and the year when our Chinese zodiac year of birth clashes with Tai Sui Bodhisattva, are there other special ages that make us prone to predestined calamities?
Answer: For those above 50, if they hit an age with two repeated digits such as 55, 66, 77, 88 or 99, they are prone to predestined calamities.
In a recent discourse, Bodhisattva has given the guidance that in order to resolve predestined calamities, one must recite 108 times of Xiao Zai Ji Xiang Shen Zhou every day, otherwise it would be difficult for the disasters to be dispersed.

PREDESTINED CALAMITIES AT AGES ENDING WITH 3, 6 OR 9 APPLY UNIVERSALLY
Caller: Are karmic passes (关) and tribulations (劫) occurring at ages ending with 3, 6 or 9 predetermined in our past lives? Does the gravity of these ordeals have anything to do with the evil deeds committed in our past lives?
Master Jun Hong Lu: No, these are cosmic laws, not aimed at any specific person. These laws apply to every person, just like birth, ageing, illness, and death. Our health is affected during the ‘3, 6, 9 predestined calamities’ and this in itself is a tribulation (劫). The magnitude of this ordeal is a function of the karmic obstacles accumulated in our past lives. Essentially, this is a time of harvest (收割期), when you have to face up to the consequences of your own actions.

THE GRAVITY OF THE ‘3, 6, 9 PREDESTINED CALAMITIES’ CAN VARY
Caller: Master, you’ve mentioned before that each person essentially experiences predestined calamities at ages ending with 3, 6, or 9. In this regard, I’d like to ask whether there is any difference, in terms of severity, between these predestined calamities?
Master Jun Hong Lu: There’s a hidden wisdom to it. Generally, ages ending with ‘6′ are not considered a major predestined calamity; ‘9’ is the most substantial, ‘3’ follows closely behind, and ‘6’ is the least impactful.
Caller: Master, when it comes to predestined calamities, are there hidden nuances? For example, should we exercise more caution at ages like 19 or 29? Conversely, during those ages when the karmic passes are deemed minor, say at the age of 16, would such calamities be relatively less serious?
Master Jun Hong Lu: The effect would be a lot less serious and it can be resolved with some recitation. But, if a major karmic pass is upon you, you must pay special attention as you run the risk of being hospitalised or encountering some other adversities.

THE ‘3, 6, 9 PREDESTINED CALAMITIES’ CAN ONLY STRIKE PRIORLY AND NOT AFTER
Caller: I am 36 this year, which is my zodiac year of birth and also the year of ‘3, 6, 9’. Which month would the predestined calamity period be considered to have drawn to a close? What should I be mindful of?
Master Jun Hong Lu: This would require a reading of your totem. But generally speaking, it would be *three months before and after your birthday*.
Caller: Am I right to say that the predestined calamities will straddle over this 6-month period?
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. You must be particularly careful during these six months. You would be fine once this period is over.
Caller: Would it happen priorly?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. It’s likely to occur priorly, and will not happen beyond this period.
Caller: I see.

RESOLVING PREDETERMINED CALAMITIES YEARS AHEAD
Caller: Master mentioned that we can resolve our predetermined calamities at ages ending with ‘3, 6, 9’ one year in advance through performing recitations. What about doing it three years ahead? For instance, can one resolve his predetermined calamities that are due to befall him at the age of 39 as soon as he reaches 36 years old?
Master Jun Hong Lu: All that you need to do is specify the targeted year in your prayer request such as, “I would like to resolve the predetermined calamities for this specific year”.

FREQUENT FRUSTRATION SIGNALS AN IMPENDING KARMIC CALAMITY
Caller: Master, in a recent radio program, you mentioned that intense frustration foretells an oncoming predestined calamity (过劫) and hence, it is crucial to remain composed in order to avert any potential trouble. Master, can you help us understand this concept?
Master Jun Hong Lu: When someone feels extremely frustrated, it often signals the onset of a calamity. Let me ask you this: Say for example, an earthquake is about to strike, birds and animals of all types will start to take flight, am I right? Likewise, don’t you think you will be simmering with rage right before an argument? As your anger boils over, it will trigger you to engage in a war of words with others.
Caller: Indeed. Master once mentioned that intense frustration is a precursor to a karmic calamity and hence, it is of utmost importance for one to remain composed, if not, one is basically asking for trouble. Does it mean that if we are able to restrain ourselves during this period, we would be able to dispel the karmic pass which otherwise may develop into something of dire consequence?
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure! Let me make it clear, ‘to experience a predestined calamity’ (过劫) in this context is not the same as ‘celebrating a special occasion’ (过节) (Note: Both are homophones in the Chinese language). In fact, it means ‘running into a calamity’ that has been predestined. Do you understand?
Caller: Yes.
Master Jun Hong Lu: When one is about to run into a predestined calamity, he will be overwhelmed by unexplainable anxiety that makes him feel like wanting to vent his anger and agitation, as these negative emotions well up inside him. However, if he is able to quell these emotions, don’t you think he is able to prevail over the karmic calamity that could well be lurking around the corner?
Caller: I see. Thank you, Master.

POSSIBLE DIVINE PREMONITIONS THAT BODHISATTVA CAN OFFER IN ADVANCE OF A KARMIC PASS
Caller: Given that Buddhist practitioners are blessed and protected by Bodhisattvas, would Bodhisattvas offer some divine premonition before misfortune, disaster or stumbling block strike in order to raise our alarm? If there is, what are the different types of divine premonition?
Master Jun Hong Lu: The divine premonitions can take the forms of a dream, perceptive sense (感觉), or possibly some random phrase that someone suddenly spits out that wakes you up. All of these are divine premonitions that Bodhisattva may present to you. Unfortunately, many people are oblivious to them and brush them aside. Indeed, some of these premonitions can be subtle and hard to pick up.
Assuming you are heading out for a drive today and suddenly, the thought of a car accident flashes through your mind – one way that Bodhisattva makes you have second thoughts. There may be occasions when the thought of “Would I meet with a car accident today?” pops up into your mind and this is when, you will tell yourself, “Gosh, this has never crossed my mind before. Why do I have this thought suddenly?” This is how it may manifest.
Caller: So, it may just be a random thought that gives you the idea.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Second, it may manifest in a dream where you dream of a car accident. Third, it may come through in the form of an unexpected call from your spouse or friend telling you, “Gosh, I met with a car accident a few days ago” – this could serve as a forewarning.
Caller: Master, how should one make vows, say the number of Little Houses to be recited or the amount of fish to be liberated, to resolve the karmic calamities upon receiving such reminders from Bodhisattvas? Is there a cardinal number that we should adhere to?
Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s critical to go all out to perform recitation during such periods. There is no two ways about it. In this regard, please recite the Xiao Zai Ji Xiang Shen Zhou, the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance and Little Houses.

WOULD THE PROPORTION OF KARMIC DEBTS INCREASE DURING THE ‘3, 6, 9 PREDETERMINED CALAMITY’ PERIOD?
Caller: Master has mentioned before that the proportion of our karmic debts is not static. Assuming the proportion of a person’s karmic debt was 20% during a totem reading session and no new negative karma was created thereafter, would the proportion of his karmic debts increase during the ‘3, 6, 9 predetermined calamity’ period?
Master Jun Hong Lu: It shouldn’t be. At 20% karmic debt, it goes to show that a significant amount of his karmic debts has been eliminated. Assuming no new negative karma is created, not only would the proportion of karmic debt not increase, the person would be able to overcome his predestined karmic calamity with ease.
Caller: Does it mean that the karmic retribution has been effectuated (报掉了)?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, and it gets effectuated at a much speedier rate.
Caller: I see.
