THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAVING THE POWER OF UNDERSTANDING, WISDOM AND TO BE ENLIGHTENED

Caller: What is the difference between these three concepts – the power of understanding, wisdom and to be enlightened?

Master Jun Hong Lu: What does it mean by having the power of understanding? The power to understand is the equivalent of coming to a recognition and making sense of something. In other words, when one is at the early stages of truly realising the truths of a matter, that is known as having the power of understanding.

As for wisdom, that is when one has already come to a realisation. If understanding refers to baby steps towards making sense of a matter, to have wisdom refers to complete understanding and realisation.

Finally, enlightenment comes when one is able to fully grasp the underlying reasons behind a matter and knows the best course of action. An enlightened person would also have already broken free and not be susceptible to any disturbances that may result from this matter. Only those who have come to an awakening can gain true wisdom; and that is why a Buddha is known as The Enlightened One.
