I started practicing Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door in 2014 because of my son. He was diagnosed to have autism at 3 years old with reading and writing difficulties. Thus, he was unable to go to school. At first, I only believed in scientific facts. However, as I have no way out, I started to recite Little Houses for my son on a trial basis, with batches of 21 Little Houses each. When my son entered primary 2, he was suddenly able to write and read. Furthermore, he scored average marks, amazing the teachers. Now, he is still going to a mainstream school, able to read and write and is even bilingual in communication. This is an awesome improvement for an autistic child! My deepest gratitude to the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva. I thought that I could continue at the slow pace of performing recitation as a full vegetarian. However, when my karmic obstacles erupted, my life turned upside down.
On 18th Jul 2017, I suddenly had a high fever and was dehydrated. Upon diagnosis, the specialist said the chances that I have leukemia is over 90%. It was a bolt from the blue for me. The doctor advised me to extract the bone marrow for further checking in confirming the type of leukemia and whether it’s curable. Under the guidance of fellow Buddhist friends, I immediately vowed to release 25,000 fish, to recite 800 Little Houses, to learn the merciful and compassionate spirit of Bodhisattva throughout my life and to save as many people as possible. If I’m able to stay alive, I will share my true experience, advise others to have faith in Buddhism and begin spiritual cultivation. I will practise vegetarianism for my whole life and will not perform acts of killing. On the day my husband heard of my medical condition, he rushed to Malaysia to release 5,000 fish for me. Another 5,000 fish were released on 21st July, which was just before my medical report was ready.
On 22nd July, the laboratory test result confirmed that I have acute leukemia (AML). Fortunately, it is still curable by chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant. On the night of the diagnosis, I suddenly had very high fever where whole body was shivering and I had breathing difficulties. I was in a state of emergency condition, my ward was full of doctors and nurses. I thought I would just pass on. At that very moment, I saw the motherly Guan Yin Bodhisattva looking at me. Next to her was a Bodhisattva with bunches of curly hairs who was sprinkling nourishing dew onto me. I overheard in a daze that: I have to go through 49 sufferings before I can get better. It was until later that I realised the other Bodhisattva is Lord Buddha. I am deeply grateful to Guan Yin Bodhisattva. However, I felt ashamed that throughout many years of Buddhist cultivation, I was never truly cultivating; it was only when I felt sick that I realised the power of Guan Yin Bodhisattva in answering all prayers. On my first night of chemotherapy, I saw many men, women and children surrounding my bed while I was drowsy. I was sure they are all my karmic creditors, I was firmed that I have to perform recitation to repay my karmic debts.
Deepest gratitude for the blessing of Bodhisattva, I didn’t feel too much pain from the chemotherapy. Whenever I feel energetic I will grab every opportunity to perform daily recitation and recite Little Houses. I wake up at 5 o’clock every morning to start performing recitation, even during the period of undergoing chemotherapy, I would persistently recite 4-7 Little Houses everyday.
Master Lu once said, “What kind of people have a lot of time? Those who are lying on the hospital bed!” I only understand this saying when I’m actually lying on the sickbed. Previously, the Buddhism In Plain Terms books that I had no time to read, the Buddhist scriptures that I was lazy to recite, had all become my last hope, my spiritual support. With Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s protection and blessing, I completed both phases of treatment successfully and can begin the final round of radiation therapy for the transplant. The transplant requires all antibodies and cancer cells to be killed, just like the historical atomic bomb unleashed its formidable radioactive effects and there may be many complications.
Before the transplant, the doctor told me, “we have the best medical team but we only have a success rate of fifty percent due to infections.” I asked the doctor, “what about the remaining fifty percent?” The doctor replied, “pray to Bodhisattva and she will protect you.” Upon hearing this, I finally felt assured as I have the best medical team and Guan Yin bodhisattva helping me and thus the chances of success is 100 percent! I prayed to Bodhisattva that I will be the evidence of miracles.
On 25 October 2017, the side effects of radiation therapy started to show and my body was rejecting it. However, Bodhisattva ensured that there was no serious inflammation or infection and I tided over the most dangerous time. On 2 January 2018, I went for a bone marrow test. The results were out on the next day and found that the cancer did not metastasise and there were no cancer cells. My treatment succeeded! Deepest gratitude to Guan Yin Bodhisattva for protecting and blessing me and for giving me another chance at life.
My husband has been supportive of me learning Buddhism and performing recitation. However, he was not willing to take up this practice. Along our journey of fighting cancer, we witnessed Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s manifestations and compassion in saving me time and again. Finally, he was willing to perform daily recitation and offer Little Houses. He also made a vow to practise vegetarianism for life and has begun to volunteer in dharma conventions. To-date, I have completed my vow of liberating 25,000 fishes and offered over 1,000 Little Houses to my karmic creditor to alleviate my illness.
It is hard to change predestined karma despite already encountering Buddhism and performing recitation as the negative karma from past lives will still affect us greatly. I hope that everyone will start performing recitation sooner rather than later to repay karmic debts and eliminate karmic obstacles. Do not wait till karmic retribution befalls you before starting to worry as the price that one has to pay is far too great. If not for the Three Golden Buddhist Practices of Guan Yin Citta and Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s compassion in saving me, I do not know what serious karmic retribution will I face. Bodhisattva has the best arrangement for me and I am able to learn Buddhism sincerely and cultivate along with my husband. With regards to both natural and man-made disasters, only Buddhism is able to help us to abandon sufferings and gain happiness.
