IT IS BEST TO ADOPT A VEGETARIAN DIET ON THE FIFTH DAY OF THE LUNAR NEW YEAR, THE DAY WHEN THE GOD OF WEALTH BRINGS GOOD FORTUNE

Caller: Dear Master Lu, it’s Chinese New Year now and we will certainly adopt a full vegetarian diet on the first and the fifteenth days of the first lunar month. Due to the many gatherings of relatives and friends during this period, could you please let us know are there any other specific days that we should avoid eating meat?

Master Jun Hong Lu: First and foremost, bear in mind that it is best to adopt a vegetarian diet on the first and the fifteenth days of the Lunar New Year. Why? It is because many Bodhisattvas will descend to the human realm on these days. As you are not a vegetarian yet, after the first day of Chinese New Year, you may return to your usual diet on the second, third and fourth days.

That said, it is best to avoid consuming animals that are slaughtered alive. The fifth day of Chinese New Year is the day that we welcome the arrival of the God of Wealth. It’s quite common for people to pray for prosperity on this day. Do you think eating meat on this day can bring you good fortune? Compassion could bring you wisdom and prosperity. When you are compassionate and abstain from killing, won’t you say you have refrained from both the act of killing as well as consuming live creatures? Adopt a vegetarian diet on this day to welcome the God of Wealth and check it out for yourself whether you have better money-making opportunities.
