HOW DO WE ENHANCE OUR POSITIVE AFFINITY WITH GUAN YIN BODHISATTVA?
Caller: Hi Master, is it true that the deeper our positive affinity with Guan Yin Bodhisattva, the more blessings we will gain and the easier it is for us to make it in our spiritual cultivation?
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s for sure. Even your positive affinity with me shares the same logic – the deeper your positive affinity with me, the more blessings you will receive. Let me share with you something that I mentioned in a session with my disciples: As much as you gaze at Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Guan Yin Bodhisattva is also watching over you. When you frequently prostrate before Guan Yin Bodhisattva and you gaze intently at Her, likewise Guan Yin Bodhisattva will also take note of your diligent visits to the Guan Yin Hall to offer your deep respect through bowing. Hence, should you be faced with any calamities at some point in your life, the moment you call upon Her, Guan Yin Bodhisattva will recognise you right away and immediately render you a helping hand.
To cite a simple example, many people will show me pictures of their loved ones but if someone shows me a photo of a familiar face and asks me to read the person’s totem, I will help that person right away. The same goes with Guan Yin Bodhisattva. If you always kneel before Guan Yin Bodhisattva and She gets to see you day in, day out, She will be familiar with your face. Assuming you make it to heaven upon your demise, and you implore, “May Guan Yin Bodhisattva help me”, needless to say, She would be able to recognise who you are.
Caller: That’s right. The deeper the affinity established in the human realm with Guan Yin Bodhisattva, the more blessings we will receive from Her.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Exactly! Take Shakyamuni Buddha for example. During His time in the human realm, the Buddha had 500 disciples under His wing. With His guidance, all of them made it to heaven in the end. Disciples like Ananda and Mahakasyapa had all become great Bodhisattvas.
Sometimes, it is good for everyone to understand it. How is it possible for Bodhisattvas to disregard affection? How is the Bodhisattva’s vow of ‘all prayers will be answered’ going to work if not for Her affection for sentient beings? Of course it is not the superfluous affection of the human realm but a profound and boundless concept of Buddhist fraternity. As long as you constantly perform prostration, Bodhisattva will recognise you. This is why I ask all of you, in performing prostration, you should gaze at the Bodhisattva’s face when you lift up your head and shut your eyes as you lower your head.
You must let Guan Yin Bodhisattva recognise you such that when you eventually make it to heaven, Guan Yin Bodhisattva will know everything about you at a glance, including where you hail from, and that you are a Guan Yin Citta practitioner.
