UNDERSTANDING “AFFLICTION GIVES RISE TO BODHI”

Caller: How are you, Master? I would like to ask a question pertaining to the phrase, “Affliction gives rise to Bodhi (enlightenment)”. Does this mean that when we are eventually free of affliction, we will lose our wisdom as well?

Master Jun Hong Lu: A person who is free from afflictions is someone whose wisdom has reached the point of perfection, his wisdom is boundless. This phrase should not be misinterpreted as elevating one’s Bodhi state through afflictions.

It’s normal to have worries in the human realm. As we become more afflicted, we learn to subdue this afflictive state by tapping into our limitless Bodhi which in turn allows us to elevate our spiritual state of mind. Once this highest state of mind is achieved, you have attained supreme Bodhi. This is fundamentally a state that is free from all afflictions. Don’t you think there is wisdom here?

Caller: Yes.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Just like education, what you learn in the primary, secondary and high schools will lay the groundwork to prepare you for your tertiary education.

Caller: That’s right, thank you, Master!
