THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

Caller: Master, today is the 15th day of the 8th lunar month or the Mid-Autumn Festival, please give us your words of advice.

Master Jun Hong Lu: In the past, the Mid-Autumn Festival was mainly a day for worshipping the moon, because the moon gives a sense of completeness. There was an ancient belief that associated the moon with the Yin energy, which refers to a foul mood, as depicted in the inherent flaws of the moon.

Why did ancient people worship the moon on the Mid-Autumn Festival? It is human nature to strive for perfection and on this festive day itself, the moon is at its fullest and roundest, giving people the sense of perfection. It’s just like when the constantly twisted and distorted human soul can attain some semblance of perfection, a state of perfect harmony will emerge. This is when things will start to fall in place for you, so to speak.

Obviously, there are also many other ancient legends that have been linked to the Mid-Autumn Festival with the story of ‘Chang E flying to the moon’ being one of them, am I right?

Caller: Right.

Master Jun Hong Lu: Embedded within these legends are the prospects of a promising future. There was a story in ancient Chinese that goes like this: An emperor had a daughter who was born extremely ugly. After years of diligently worshipping the moon, the daughter eventually transformed into an exceptionally beautiful princess. I will end the story as is given the length of this classical legend.

The story tells us that if you are someone who is constantly worshipping the moon, you will become increasingly beautiful. With the Yin energy of the moon, females will look extraordinarily beautiful, high-spirited and perfect in many other aspects on this day. As a matter of fact, all of these tales depict mankind’s virtuous inclination towards wholesomeness – a time when they tap into the energy field of heaven. There are clearly many other captivating folklores, for example, Chang E’s beauty is said to be legendary.

Thus, the Mid-Autumn Festival is about reunification, that is to say, a type of constant strive for perfection and harmonisation of one’s mental state. Why is this festival so popular? This is because the type of spiritual perfection that we seek comes in all shapes, ways and forms. This is a day of perfection, a time when the human realm will herald in a type of auspiciousness. As such, we should not pass this auspicious day in vain.

I’d urge all of you to make good use of this auspicious day to diligently eliminate your vexations so as to attain a more beautiful inner being. Avoid getting upset on this day. If you get stirred up emotionally, in the midst of a conversation, for example, this means that you are someone who has yet to attain perfection in the mind.

Caller: I see. Thank you Master, for your guidance.
