MASTER LU’S DISCOURSE ON THE CUNDI DHARANI

Caller: Master, I dreamt that you asked me if I knew why the Cundi Dharani was so efficacious. I had a notion that this has to do with the Great Compassion Mantra and the Heart Sutra. Master Lu, can you please explain to us?

Master Jun Hong Lu: The Cundi Dharani is one of the ten short Buddhist scriptures and it is very efficacious because it is blessed with Cundi Bodhisattva’s protection. It represents one’s resolution to learn Buddhism and perform recitation – a kind of willpower and faith.

“Samyak Sambuddha” (三藐三菩陀) as mentioned in the scripture actually refers to one who has supreme wisdom. This tells us that one must be upright for the recitation of this scripture to be efficacious.

When reciting the verse “Zhe Li Zhu Li” (折戾主戾), it has the effect of reinforcing your faith.

Caller: Master, will the effects of Cundi Dharani be better if we recite the Great Compassion Mantra and the Heart Sutra first, before we recite Cundi Dharani?

Master Jun Hong Lu: The Great Compassion Mantra has the ability to increase one’s spiritual energy, so is the Cundi Dharani. The word ‘Cundi’ means ‘purification’. It is a miraculous mantra that has a ‘purification’ effect.

Once you are in a state of purification, all matters will reach closure. Hence, the verse “Suo Po He” (娑婆诃) often appears in Buddhist scriptures to denote the accomplishment of perfection.
