THE MEANING OF “LIBERATING 10,000 LIVES HELPS AVOID THE EIGHT DIFFICULTIES; LIBERATING 50,000 LIVES HELPS AVOID FALLING INTO THE LOWER REALMS OF EXISTENCE”

Caller: Master once cited a quote from Guan Yin Bodhisattva that goes like this “Liberating 10,000 lives helps avoid the Eight Difficulties; liberating 50,000 lives helps avoid falling into the lower realms of existence”. What does it take for this saying to hold true? Does one’s karmic debt need to fall below a certain ratio for it to work?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course! Broadly speaking, if you are one who does no evil, and are able to perform such extensive life liberation, you will become a Bodhisattva.
Clearly, there is a condition attached to it. It will not work if you still generate new negative karma. Under such circumstances, it won’t work no matter how much you release, be it thousands of lives, not even tens of thousands of lives.
What this essentially means is when a person is very pure and is a practising Buddhist and if he is able to liberate such huge quantities of captive lives, he is capable of “becoming a Buddha instantaneously”. This means he can become a Buddha in the human realm, provided he meets the criteria. Obviously, it does not apply to those who still commit sins and there is no way that such people can become a Buddha. Do you understand me?

Caller: Yes, I do. It looks like it is contingent upon one not creating new negative karma, being steadfast in one’s spiritual cultivation and fervently reciting the Buddhist scriptures. Am I right to say so?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, that should be the way.
