WHAT IS CONSIDERED PRACTISING MULTIPLE DHARMA DOORS?
Caller: Master Lu, is it considered practising multiple dharma doors if we read the teachings of other dharma doors or eminent monks, or other materials related to metaphysics?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Let me explain with an example. If you are studying at university today, and you read some other reference books occasionally, that is fine. But if you were to delve deeper into it, do you think you would still be able to do well in your undergraduate studies?
Caller: No
Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s for sure that you would not be able to excel in your academic major. For example, you are a medical student specialising in pediatrics, but you start to delve deeply into orthopedics, followed by internal medicine. Granted, you may have gained the knowledge of different specialisations, but would you be able to graduate in pediatrics eventually?
Caller: No.
Master Jun Hong Lu: You are not focussed!
Caller: At times, Master would mention some Buddhist terms in your discourses, and some Buddhist practitioners would search on Master’s blog for further explanation for these terms. When they could not find the relevant references on your blog, they would refer to some Buddhist dictionary websites. Is this considered a case of practising multiple dharma doors?
Master Jun Hong Lu: This should not be considered as such. However, if you ended up extracting a lot of references simply because you are searching for these few terms, then it is considered as practising multiple dharma doors. By practising multiple dharma doors, it means that you have contravened your original practice.
For example, you are currently practising a specific Buddhist sect, and at the same time, you are also going in-depth into other Buddhist sects. Although it does not necessarily mean that it is improper, there is no doubt that it constitutes an act of practising multiple dharma doors.
