HOW TO DEAL WITH SLANDER AND BACKBITING
Caller: Master Lu, if slander and backbiting leads to a Buddhist friend becoming estranged with the group, how should we deal with that?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Remain in the state of unmoving suchness, just like Bodhisattvas. Remember, when we are confronted with allegations, correct it if there is any basis in the allegation and guard against them if there is not. What is slander? It is like launching an arrow into the sky. If you are innocent, there is nothing for others to accuse you with. Without a target, the arrow will simply fall.
Caller: Yes!
Master Jun Hong Lu: Slander is meaningless. If you are a target of slander, it means that you are always in that person’s mind. If you ignore them, it means that they do not affect you. However, if you let their words get under your skin, you are no better than them.
Caller: I understand. Thank you, Master Lu.
