PROPER HANDLING OF A FAULTY RECITATION TALLY COUNTER; IT IS FINE TO PLACE THE DEVICE IN THE PANTS POCKETS
Question: Unaware that the recitation tally counter is a mini dharma instrument in the past, we had casually disposed of the device whenever one became faulty. What would be the proper method to handle a faulty recitation tally counter? Is it necessary to recite the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance (LIFO) if we drop or misplace it by accident? Can we place the recitation tally counter in the pants pockets?
Answer: You do not have to recite LIFO if the counter becomes defective, but it should be properly wrapped up before disposal. Since the device is being used whenever we perform recitation every day, it would have some form of energy, hence it is considered a dharma instrument. It is fine to place it in the pants pockets.
