PRAY TO REPENT PRESENT-LIFE’S KARMIC OBSTACLES WHEN RECITING THE EIGHTY-EIGHT BUDDHAS GREAT REPENTANCE (LIFO)
Caller: A Buddhist practitioner sent me a template of prayer requests for online group study and the recitation of some Buddhist scriptures a few days ago. It is allegedly shared by Australia Oriental Radio and is being circulated online.
I would like to clarify with Master, how should we state our prayer before reciting LIFO? Should we state that, “I repent for my karmic obstacles of present life”, or make a general prayer request that, “I repent for my karmic obstacles”?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Generally speaking, you repent for your karmic obstacles of this lifetime.
Caller: Is it a must to be so specific?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. Because the karmic obstacles from your past lives will be brought forward to the present life, and they will still end up as your karmic obstacles of this lifetime.
Caller: Oh I see. So when reciting the LIFO, we should say the prayer, “May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva help me <your full name> to repent and eliminate my karmic obstacles of this life”, is that right?
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right.
