HOW DO MERITS AND VIRTUES ELIMINATE NEGATIVE KARMA?
Caller: When we pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva to use our merits and virtues to eliminate negative karma for cases where foreign spirits are present, are those merits and virtues used directly to repay the foreign spirits? Could they be used as a substitute for Little Houses to reduce the number of Little Houses required to repay the foreign spirits?
Master Jun Hong Lu: It is difficult for merits and virtues to be used as an offset against Little Houses. Realistically, merits and virtues are meant to enhance one’s spiritual energy, boosting one’s capacity to recite more powerful Little Houses. While others’ Little Houses may have 50% power, Little Houses recited by those with stronger spiritual energy can potentially have 70%-80% power. The latter will be more effective, of course. Conceptually, this is how it works.
In addition, when you possess spiritual energy, you can store it for future use, allowing you to fend off impending disasters or mishaps. While others may be left helpless in the face of calamity, you, armed with sufficient spiritual energy, can emerge unscathed as your prayer gets answered immediately.
For example, when someone is stirring up trouble, you can pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva to bless you and eliminate the misfortune. A few days later, that person may stop bugging you. On the contrary, people with little merit and virtue, will have their prayer rendered useless and calamity will still come upon them.
