Question 22
ARE WE ABLE TO TAP INTO MERITS ACCRUED FROM LIFE LIBERATIONS PERFORMED IN THE PAST WHICH WORLDLY BLESSINGS HAD ALREADY BEEN SOUGHT?
Question: We often hear of Buddhist practitioners making use of merits yielded from life liberations performed over the past years to request for blessings to resolve their issues. I’d like to seek guidance from Master whether there are any remaining merits that we can tap into from life liberations performed in the past after which we had prayed for blessings?
Answer: It really depends. In cases where such merits have substantially depleted, your prayer request will come to nought.
For example, assuming you had previously liberated a total of 1,000 fishes and had prayed for blessings every time you performed such act, and for that your wishes were granted, don’t you think that the meritorious blessings have been fully consumed? (Yes)
In this scenario, further prayer requests that tap into the merits from life liberations performed in the past will not be effective at all. This is because you are merely scrapping the bottom of the barrel when there is indeed nothing much left for use. Do you understand?
If there are still some remaining, these small quantities of merits could be pooled together to help eliminate a small amount of karmic obstacles.
(Thank you Master for enlightening us.)
