RECITATION OF ADDITIONAL AMITABHA PURE LAND REBIRTH MANTRA FROM WINTER SOLSTICE TO THE THIRD DAY OF LUNAR NEW YEAR
Question: In one of your radio programs, it was mentioned that from this Winter Solstice till the third day of Lunar New Year, we could recite up to three batches of Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra (Wang Sheng Zhou) daily (i.e. the first batch as our homework, and the subsequent two batches in the form of Self-Cultivation which are to be offered upon completion). This would help to eliminate karmic debts that were activated following the recitation of Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance (Li Fo Da Chan Hui Wen). Can we apply this method as a long-term practice?
Answer: Actually, this method would still activate the negative karmas. Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra could activate minor spirits, whereas Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance could activate major spirits. It doesn’t mean that by reciting Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra you could evade the major spirits as you enter old age. There’s no escape from what you have owed. Hence, it’s imperative to recite the Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance diligently.
In the past, I mentioned that Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance is akin to apologizing to each and every ‘department’ before overall forgiveness can be attained. The Sapta Atitabuddha Karasaniya Dharani, (Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan) on the other hand, is like apologizing to the seven departments concerned. Thus, the power of Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance is enormous.
Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra is a mantra. The method of reciting three batches of such a mantra daily is just like taking the easy way out. Yet, it is unable to replace Eighty-eight Buddhas Great Repentance and the Little Houses. This method is one-off and cannot be applied as a long-term practice.
