DO NOT PLACE PORTRAIT/STATUE OF BODHISATTVA ON THE STOOL

Caller: A Buddhist practitioner planned to set up an altar after moving into a new house. As he has yet moved in, the portrait/statue of the Bodhisattva is kept on a stool. Is this proper?

Master Jun Hong Lu: No, it’s not proper! Stools are for people to sit on. The portrait should be placed on a table instead!

Caller: I see. Must it be placed flat on the table?

Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right. As stools are for people to sit on. If the portrait of Bodhisattva is placed on it, it is disrespectful, regardless if the stool is a brand new one and has never been sat on before.

Caller: If the portrait of Bodhisattva is placed horizontally and kept in a red bag, instead of being wrapped with red cloth, is that alright?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It’s better to have it wrapped up.
