THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FOUR SCRIPTURES CONTAINED IN THE LITTLE HOUSE

Caller: Hi Master, I’d like to ask about the relationship between Buddhist scriptures – the Great Compassion Mantra, the Heart Sutra, the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra and the Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan – contained in the Little Houses and the corresponding number of recitations that we need to perform for each of them. Or do they have anything to do with some other guiding principles in Buddhism? Please enlighten us.

Master Jun Hong Lu: There is definitely a relationship! To begin with, it is a must to recite the Heart Sutra and the Great Compassion Mantra.

The Great Compassion Mantra is meant to boost your spiritual energy allowing the indestructible Bodhi Wisdom within you to be unleashed. On the other hand, the Heart Sutra is designed to help resolve your karmic grievances, mental afflictions and obstructions that you are confronted with in this mundane world, so that you can understand your problems and find happiness.

But in the process of resolving your problems, don’t you also need to recite the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra? Don’t you think you have to eliminate all your past negative karma, which includes the act of killing that you have committed, and karmic conflicts you are entangled with? This is the purpose of reciting the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra.

After reciting the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra to repay your karmic debt, don’t you think you should recite the Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan? When you know that you have committed wrongdoings, wouldn’t you want your karma to be eradicated?

Caller: Yes.
