WHAT IS THE TRUTH TAUGHT BY THE BUDDHA?
Caller: On the Laba Festival (the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month), which is also Shakyamuni Buddha’s Enlightenment Day, while offering an incense, a disciple received some messages from Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Allow me to read it out:
“Today is the auspicious Enlightenment Day of the Lord Buddha. I hope all disciples will keep the teachings of the Buddha close to their hearts, teach and transform sentient beings with their compassion.
By recollecting the life journey of the Buddha, all of you would be able to gain insight into the truth that the Buddha expounds to awaken sentient beings. You will also stand to benefit immensely because these recollections will save you from making mistakes in your spiritual cultivation journey.
To deliver sentient beings and liberate them from the sea of suffering, you must first emulate the Buddha’s compassion, and the profound love He had. In this Age of Dharma Decline, sentient beings generate such heavy karma that they cannot free themselves from suffering.
You must count your blessings to have your Master coming to the human realm to deliver sentient beings. Sadly, there are people who find it challenging to keep their faith, let alone have any spiritual accomplishment because they lack affinity and blessings.
What is worse is when I see those who backslide in their practice. It makes my heart ache with unspeakable apprehension”.
Guan Yin Bodhisattva said, “By recollecting the life journey of the Buddha, all of you would be able to gain insight into the truth that the Buddha expounds to awaken sentient beings”.
I would like to ask what is the ‘truth’ in this context?
Master Jun Hong Lu: What the Buddha is telling us is to abandon suffering and gain happiness, to see through the reality of this world and recognise the fact that life is bitter and impermanent. This is the truth of life that the Buddha teaches. The truth of the human realm is suffering and emptiness. The suffering that one endures his entire life leads to nothing in the end. Besides, we are also living with impermanence. Simply put, the truth is “Suffering, emptiness and impermanence”.
Caller: Understood. Deepest gratitude to the Buddha for bringing Buddhism into the human realm. We must also be truly grateful to you, Master.
Master Jun Hong Lu: That’s right! The Buddha has taught us the path to liberation. The Buddha is simply marvellous.
Caller: That is true.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Humans are indeed pitiful!
