WAYS TO CORRECT HABITUAL THINKING AND TRANSFORM IT INTO THE RIGHT THOUGHT
Caller: How do we correct our habitual thinking and transform it into the right thought, like that of a Bodhisattva?
Master Jun Hong Lu: When the same train of thought keeps occurring, it will eventually become your habitual line of thinking. How do you transform it then?
Firstly, it depends on whether this is a right or erroneous habitual line of thought. If you think it is right, there is no need for you to change it. Otherwise, you will have to correct your mindset. After the wrong train of thought is transformed, do not revisit. At the same time, you need to keep the right thoughts in your head.
What is right and what is wrong? Let me quote you a simple example. You see a pitiful person begging for food on the street. In the past, with your wrong thought, you tended to think, “Look at these people, they are not even physically challenged in any way, why don’t they get a job instead of begging for food? Not as if they are incapable of supporting themselves, why don’t they find a job? Why are they asking for money?”
However, when you reach a higher spiritual state with time, when there’s compassion in you, you will start to feel that they are pitiable.
You will think, “It is not right for me to always think in such way. I must change this habitual thinking of mine.”
The next time you see them, you start to ponder, “They are so pitiful, suffering from present-life retribution. They are able-bodied and yet, refuse to exert themselves. If only they knew that labour is glorious and it is exceptional to be able to work.” This is how your thoughts are transformed.
