HOW TO DEDICATE OURSELVES TO PROGRESS AND AVOID REGRESSING IN SPIRITUAL CULTIVATION; SINCERITY AND A HEART OF GRATITUDE ARE KEYS TO PRACTISING BUDDHISM

Caller: There are many Buddhist friends who set forth in their practice of Buddhism with an objective in mind. For example, they wish to get the blessings of Bodhisattva for their health to improve, etc. At this time, they are very diligent.

Master Jun Hong Lu: This is normal.

Caller: Then when their health condition starts to improve, or they manage to pull through certain obstacles, they become less diligent and start to regress.

Master Jun Hong Lu: There are so many cases like this.

Caller: How can we maintain our level of diligence when we are progressing well, as there could be obstacles that cause us to regress along the way?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It all depends on each person’s level of enlightenment. When a person practises Buddhism with a motive in mind, they tend not to last very long in their spiritual journey as compared to being without a specific objective.

For example, there are many people who are reasonably well to do and in good health, and they will make it a point to pray and kneel at the temple whenever they get the chance to. These are the people who will do better and better in life.

The problem with human beings is that they lack sincerity and do not have a heart of gratitude.

Why is conscience lacking in people these days? It boils down to their lack of gratitude. Without gratitude, we are no different from animals.

It is like a snake which is about to freeze to death at the roadside, as soon as you warm it back to life, it will bite you! That’s the characteristic of a beast, not a human.
