THOUGH I ASPIRE TO LIBERATE ALL SENTIENT BEINGS, NOT A SINGLE BEING IS LIBERATED BY ME

Master Jun Hong Lu: “Though I aspire to liberate all sentient beings, not a single being is liberated by me.” What does this sentence mean?

The Bodhisattva is telling us that we shouldn’t think too highly of ourselves in our effort to help others. The fact is, these people are already Bodhisattvas to begin with.

That is why I’ve always said, I have never felt like I have come to save you. All of you possessed the Buddha nature in you to begin with. This is what the Buddha said.

Hence, you don’t need me to save you. What I did was just to give you a little help so that you can gain self-realisation. Do you understand?

Hence, the sentence ‘Though I aspire to liberate all sentient beings, not a single being is liberated by me’ means there’s not even a single being that you have saved!

This is the spirit of the kindness of the Bodhisattva and the essence of the Diamond Sutra – do good deeds anonymously.
