DO NOT COMPARE BETWEEN MERITORIOUS DEEDS

Question: Similar to setting up of Buddhist altars for others, performing life liberation also encompasses the three forms of Dana (the practice of giving).  What then are the differences in merits accumulated from both deeds?

Answer: Do not make such a comparison.  With so many Bodhisattvas in heaven, which one do you think has the greatest merit?  Performing life liberation and setting up Buddhist altars for others can both accumulate significant meritorious blessings; it only depends on how much you do.  If you have performed a large amount of life liberation, then the merits accumulated are greater than that of setting up a Buddhist altar.  Conversely, if you have set up 100 Buddhist altars, but have only released 100 fish, obviously the setting up of Buddhist altars in this instance accumulates greater meritorious blessings.  It is the idea that ‘quantity generates value’.
