CONTEMPLATE, PURIFY AND ACHIEVE EMPTINESS OF THE MIND

Master Jun Hong Lu: The Bodhisattva wants us to watch our mind and thoughts that could arise at any time. When there are greed, hatred, ignorance, scattered thoughts or narrow-mindedness, one will feel unsettled and fail to extricate themselves from the situation. Their minds start to get confused and they will fail to differentiate between good and evil.

There are those who seemingly have a good conscience; however, when they are overwhelmed with selfish thoughts, narrow-mindedness, messy thoughts or greed, hatred and ignorance, they will immediately lose their ability to discern. They are unable to tell the good from the bad.

For example, you are supposed to do all good and refrain from all things evil. Then you start thinking, “Perhaps I should just focus on my personal cultivation instead. If I am not well-cultivated myself, how can I help others?”

In that instant, you have eliminated your kind thoughts and your evil thoughts start to get the better of you. Gradually, you will be in the company of evil thoughts.

Hence, we need to eliminate all those evil thoughts in us, and transform them into pure thoughts, thoughts that are uncontaminated. We must curb all such unwholesome thoughts in our consciousness.
