Time : Saturday 2pm-4.15pm
Platform : ZOOM Cloud Meeting
Topic of Discussion : LITTLE HOUSE – THE FOUNDATION OF GUAN YIN CITTA PRACTICE (Part 2)

On 16 January 2021, Guan Yin Citta, Singapore held another online English Group Study, focusing on the various applications of Little House in quelling our life impediments in a continuation of the previous session.

The session started off with a short video playback on Master Lu’s discourse which reemphasised the importance of being diligent in cultivating our mind and practising Buddhism and never yield to a common pitfall of not having a sense of crisis in conducting our daily lives.

Little House comes with an immense inherent power that can help resolve our life challenges and spare us from bodily suffering. Repaying karmic debt through Little House is 10x more effective than through grievous bodily harm.

The participants were taught that it is best to recite 69 Little House in the face of any major calamities when the exact number required is not known. The numeric 69 is considered as a point of balance.

Master Lu recommends offering Little House to the deceased on every seventh day in the initial 49-day period upon one’s demise as these dates are crucial for the deceased. Such method works better compared to burning Little House as and when one completes the recitation.

Those, who suffer from critical illnesses or having their bodies being occupied by foreign spirits, can adopt a targeted approach before offering Little House by praying to the Bodhisattva for blessings and help to eliminate a specific karmic obstacle.

The participants were reminded to ask for blessings from the Tai Sui Bodhisattva on a monthly basis instead of yearly before offering the Little House to resolve the clash.

The testimony sharing by one Buddhist friend has once again reinforced the importance of being steadfast and diligent in one’s spiritual cultivation and through the application of Little House one can ward off predestined calamities and bring blessings to the family.

In the upcoming session – scheduled on 23 January – the true meaning of happiness from a Buddhism standpoint will be revealed.

Let us now look at some comments from participants:

A good overview on the types of Little House and how Little House works and its applications. I am blessed with this Dharma tool to eliminate karmic obstacles.

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY?

How Little House Works?

1.Helps spirits ascend to a higher spiritual realm

2.Resolves karmic conflicts

3.Eliminates karmic obstacles

4.Offsets clash with Tai Sui Bodhisattva

5.Resolves predetermined calamities

6.Reserves for future use

< LITTLE HOUSE – THE FOUNDATION OF GUAN YIN CITTA PRACTICE >

The Little House is a combination of four classic Buddhist scriptures:

  • The Great Compassion Mantra (Da Bei Zhou, or Ta Pei Chou in Chinese),  27 times;
  • The Heart Sutra (Xin Jing, or Hsin Ching in Chinese),  49 times;
  • The Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra (Wang Sheng Zhou or Wang Sheng Chou in Chinese), 84 times;
  • The Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan (or Chi Fo Mieh Tsui Chen Yan), 87 times.

The Little House can be used for several purposes, including helping the deceased ascend to a higher spiritual realm, resolving karmic conflicts with others, and eliminating karmic obstacles. In consequence, it helps us improve our lives and resolve calamities. Once we pay off our karmic debts in the human realm, we will be able to transcend the cycle of rebirth, ascend to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, or the Four Sagely Realms when we pass away.

Outrun Your Suffering by Practising Buddhism

  • We are anxious about the future, yet we don’t cherish what we have in the present.
  • If one lacks the sense of crisis, that is the biggest crisis.
  • That’s why we must cultivate our mind and practise Buddhism, so that we can outrun all sufferings.
  • Only by saving ourselves first, could we save and awaken others.

Under what circumstances do we need to recite Little Houses?

Types of Little Houses

Wenda20190707   01:03:49  (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
TO RECITE BATCHES OF 21 LITTLE HOUSES CONTINUOUSLY

Caller: Master Lu, if calamities and critical illnesses had befallen fellow Buddhist practitioners who do not have the opportunity to have their Totem read by Master, is it proper for us to advise them to make a vow to recite Little Houses in large quantities but to offer them in batches of 49 each?  And when their condition improves, to reduce the quantity to 21 Little Houses per batch?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes. You may even start with batches of 21 continuously.  It is a good start, as 21 Little Houses is to counter predestined calamities (劫数)

Caller: Alright. Thank you Master.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MASTER LU’S RADIO PROGRAM:
OFFERING OF 69 LITTLE HOUSES CAN HELP DISPEL GREAT CALAMITIES

During the (Metaphysics Q&A) program dated 16 Mar 2014, Master Lu said that if someone encounters great calamities and does not know how many Little Houses to complete, he should start with 69 first, as 69 serves as a point to balance.  Master Lu used lessening the impact of ocean waves as a striking metaphor.

If you encounter some trouble in your day-to-day activities, you can recite 21 Little Houses. If it’s a serious matter, you would have to recite 49 Little Houses. If the problem develops into a calamity, you can respond with 69 Little Houses. Eventually, to fully dispel calamities you would still need to recite Little Housesbatch by batch.

Caller: A Buddhist friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and she had surgery to completely remove it. In her case, at least how many Little House does she have to recite?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Has she recited any Little Houses before surgery?

Caller: Yes.

Master Jun Hong Lu:  She should continue to recite. It will prevent cancer from growing on the other side.  In her case, she should start with 69 Little Houses. I would also like to use this occasion to explain this point further:  If you encounter a problem and think it is serious but do not know how many Little Houses you should recite, it is best to recite 69. It is a point of balance, because this number looks the same whether viewed normally or upside down.  Therefore, recite 69 Little Houses if you are unsure.

Caller:  Alright. What’s the difference between 69 and 49 Little Houses? I was under the impression that it had been 49. Is it that when things get worse we will have to recite 69?

Master Jun Hong Lu:   Exactly! For a batch of 49 Little Houses, it can be used to deal with a pretty serious problem.  Let me use an example and you will understand better.  Imagine that you are at the seaside, if a small wave comes then you can tackle it with 21 Little Houses. To deal with a big wave, as a metaphor for a big problem, then you need 49. And 69 can be used to deal with a tumbling, huge wave.

Caller: Ok, Thanks Master.

Little House for Karmic Creditors (自己的要经者) &
Spirits Occupying One’s Property (房子的要经者)

Wenda20121228   51:14  (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
HOW DO WE DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE KARMIC CREDITOR OF THE HOUSE AND OUR OWN KARMIC CREDITOR?

Caller: A few days ago, I dreamt that someone was trying to break into my house. I blocked the door and he came in through my roof window instead. In my dream, I said to him, “I still have a little money, I can give it to you.” Then he agreed. May I ask if this is the karmic creditor of my house or my own karmic creditor?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is your own karmic creditor.

Caller:  In what circumstances will it be the karmic creditor of my house?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Generally speaking, if you are often perplexed and unsettling and feel as though you saw someone at home, then that is the karmic creditor of your house. If you have a headache or feel uncomfortable and upset, and he only appears in your dream, then that is your own karmic creditor.

Caller: When I have a headache or when he appears in my dream, correct?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Yes, he would appear in your dream and keep staring at you, and that is your own karmic creditor.

Caller: Got it!

Little House for Aborted or Miscarried Children (打胎或流产的孩子)

Inspirational Stories 119 How do I transfer merits to my aborted child?

Note: Transfer Merits here refers to Recite Little Houses

How do I transfer merits to my aborted child?

Firstly, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva, to the merciful Master Lu, and to all the dharma practitioners who have helped me.

I have had an abortion before practising Buddhism. I believe that because of the karmic retribution of the abortion, neither my son’s health nor his study was satisfactory. Additionally, he always set himself against me. I was in despair and didn’t know how to relieve my pain. In April 2012, I looked up to the sky desperately and said: “Bodhisattva, I want to practise Buddhism. Please grant me a master who can give me guidance.” Something amazing happened. While I was surfing on the Internet, I found Master Lu’s blog. Later on, a dharma practitioner in Beijing posted four Little Houses and a Buddhist scripture booklet to me. I regarded them as treasures.

As I wanted to save those Little Houses posted to me from Beijing for late use, I drew some Little Houses on my own and began to recite. I was very sincere when I recited Little Houses. Not long since then, I dreamt of a little girl and a little boy at the entrance of a parking lot. The little girl waved to me happily and said good-bye but the boy was crying. I continued to recite scriptures, but forgot to offer Little Houses to my aborted child. As my son’s health has become much better, I slacked off in my practice. I deeply repent for not transferring merits to my aborted child! In year 2013, I was diagnosed with a big lump in my body. The doctor suggested to remove it with a surgery.

I came to the realization that I had forgotten to offer Little Houses to my aborted child. I immediately made a vow to offer 21 Little Houses to both my aborted child and to my karmic creditors and release 50 fishes. On Buddha’s birthday, I recited the Eighty-Eight Buddha Great Repentance 13 times. I had a dream at night which suggested that my karmic debts had been reduced. I went in for another medical check on the next day, and was told that the lump had disappeared! Although I realize that the spirit of my aborted child was still occupying my body, I slacked off in my practice again. I feel very ashamed of my inherent weakness!

In 2015, another lump appeared in my body. My husband urged me to remove it. I told him to give me three months’ time. I was determined to offer Little Houses to my aborted child to repay for my karmic debts. I have already offered more than 100 Little Houses. At night, I often dreamt about him in nice clothes but my body didn’t feel well in the daytime. I mentioned my experience to other dharma practitioners and they told me that I was not sincere enough. I finally came to the realization of what I had been thinking while I was reciting scriptures – “I have offered more than 100 Little Houses, but why my child is still here and continuously making me suffer?!” I hereby repent deeply of my mistakes.

However, after a week, mercifulness still hasn’t grown from my heart because I still felt that I hadn’t been sincere in my practice, until a senior dharma practitioner pointed out to me that I had kill my child who was meant to live his whole life in our world. I finally realized how wrong I had been!

I went home and couldn’t stop crying in front of my altar. I promised to Guan Yin Bodhisattva that I would never do this again. Right after burning the last 7 Little Houses, I dreamt about my aborted child reincarnating. The only reason that it took me three years to help my child reincarnate was that, I didn’t realize my mistake and wasn’t insincere or dedicated in my practice.

At last, I would like to deeply repent of myself again, and to extend my gratitude towards Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Master Lu, and all dharma practitioners.

Little House for the Deceased (亡人)

Q&A 74 PERFORMING RECITATIONS FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS ON THEIR DEATHBED

Q&A 74. Performing recitations for family and friends on their deathbed

Excerpt from Master Lu’s Q&A (272), 11 December 2018
Journey to Heaven C13. The Buddha Cautions All Parents to Set a Good Example; Three Offenders on Trial (11 November 2018)

The King of Hell:

“If a deceased person’s relatives practise Buddhism and perform meritorious deeds such as life liberations for them during the initial 49-day period after their death, it will help the deceased to eliminate their negative karma quickly.

But once the 49 days are over, the negative karma is set and only the energy of Buddhist scriptures can help them ascend to a higher realm.

Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door uses a collection of Buddhist scriptures – Little Houses – while other Dharma Doors have their own ways of helping spirits ascend to a higher realm.

However, you must remember not to compare nor make casual comments about other Dharma Doors.

Every Dharma Door has its sutras and mantras that help the deceased to ascend, and they are all equally effective.

The reason why Little Houses can help spirits ascend to a higher realm and so quickly eliminate negative karma is because of the immense power of vows and compassion possessed by Guan Yin Bodhisattva.

If anyone in the Human Realm is reckless enough to recite and offer the Little Houses in a dishonest manner – like those who fill in all the dots of the Little House without reciting the sutras in full – then the Underworld will report the names of the culprits who signed and recited them, to the Heavenly court.

This happens after the counterfeit Little Houses have accumulated up to a certain amount, or when we receive complaints from the spirits about not receiving sufficient scriptures. We have the device to track it. The Heavenly court will then write an official letter to authorise our action.

I hope you will convey this to the people in the Human Realm, reminding them to properly recite the sutras.

Never use Dharma items to trick people and line their pockets. Don’t fool around with the Underworld! Buddhist rituals and matters relating to helping spirits ascend to a higher realm should never be treated lightly.

Otherwise, when you come down and kneel before me, I can only act according to the law.”

Q&A 119. HELPING THE DECEASED TO ASCEND TO A HIGHER SPIRITUAL REALM

If you dream about the deceased, it means they would like you to recite Little Houses for them. Generally, you need to recite 7 Little Houses for each of them. If the deceased are your family members, you should recite extra Little Houses for them so that they can ascend to a higher spiritual realm, such as heaven. This is one way to show filial piety, which is the foremost of all virtues.

When you recite Little Houses to help the spirit of the deceased ascend to a higher realm, generally you need to recite 21 Little Houses for the deceased to proceed to the next higher realm; specifically, from the underworld to the human realm, then to the Asura realm, and then to heaven. However, in most cases, 21 Little Houses are not enough, as it also depends on the spiritual power of the reciter, the karma of the deceased, etc.

If the deceased is in hell, it tends to be very difficult to help them ascend to a higher realm. You can start with 49 Little Houses for the first batch and see if they are able to leave hell.

Little House to Resolve Karmic Conflicts (化解冤结的小房子)

Q&A 158. OFFERING LITTLE HOUSES TO RESOLVE KARMIC CONFLICTS (AN EXCERPT)

The recitation of the Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots is effective in resolving karmic conflicts, provided that the damage is not severe, otherwise the karmic conflicts will still not be completely resolved.

For example, you accidentally bump into someone. If you apologise and this person forgives you, then it is over.

However, if you have caused injuries to this person, simply saying sorry is not enough to resolve the issue. You will need to offer Little Houses to resolve the karmic conflicts. This is a much more powerful and effective way to resolve karmic conflicts.

You can address the Little House to “<Your full name> resolves karmic conflicts”. Generally, it is NOT recommended to address the Little House to the name of the other party or names of both parties.

Before you recite and burn the Little House, you can say the following prayer:

“May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me, <your full name>, help me to resolve my negative karmic affinity with <full name of the other person>.”

Alternatively, you can say the prayer in its general form:

“May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me, <your full name>, help me to resolve my negative karmic affinity.”

Q&A 158. Offering Little Houses to resolve karmic conflicts

Wenda20200821   01:24:50 (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
LITTLE HOUSE TO RESOLVE KARMIC CONFLICTS IS MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE THAN MANTRA TO UNTIE KARMIC KNOTS IN RESOLVING KARMIC CONFLICTS

Caller: Master, if I realise that I have karmic conflicts with someone, should I immediately make a vow to recite Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots or the Little House to Resolve Karmic Conflicts, which is more effective?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is certainly much more effective to recite the Little House to Resolve Karmic Conflicts.

However, the problem is that you might not be able to recite the said Little House in time. In that case, you would definitely have to recite the Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots first.

Master Jun Hong Lu’s Discourse (Question 314) 12 June 2019
OFFER NINE LITTLE HOUSES PER BATCH FOR RESOLVING KARMIC CONFLICTS BETWEEN ADULTS

Question: Generally, how many Little Houses should we offer in a batch to resolve the karmic conflicts between adults?

Answer: It is better to offer nine Little Houses in a batch, as that number represents resolving karmic conflicts permanently.

The Unparalleled Power of Little House in Repaying Karmic Debts

Repaying karmic debts through the Little House is:

– 10x more effective than through physical body; and

– It will spare us from physical suffering

Otherwise, there will be no end to it if we rely on repaying our karmic debts through physical body!

Little House to offset clash with the Tai Sui Bodhisattva (犯太岁)

An Excerpt Reply from 2OR Secretariat to a written enquiry January 31, 2017
BURNING LITTLE HOUSES TO OFFSET CLASH WITH THE TAI SUI BODHISATTVA

Question: How do we offset the effect of clashing with the Tai Sui Bodhisattva through offering Little Houses?

Answer: Offer Little Houses addressed to your own karmic creditors in a batch of 27 Little Houses every month.

Answer:

The prayer should be,

“May the Tai Sui Bodhisattva protect and bless me xxx so that I stay safe in the month of xxx”.

This is to be done each month. For example, you would pray,

“May the Tai Sui Bodhisattva protect and bless me so that I would have a safe month in January”.

Answer: You may do this every month so that you will be blessed and protected every single month throughout the year. Don’t be greedy and pray, “May Bodhisattva protect and bless me for the whole of 2017 so that I will be safe and sound as it may be ineffective. ”

The best way is to do it one month at a time. Little Houses offered for resolving the clash with the Tai Sui Bodhisattva have to be offered as a stand-alone, on a monthly basis.

Wenda20180223 47:06 (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
LITTLE HOUSES FOR RESOLVING THE CLASH WITH TAI SUI BODHISATTVA CAN BE OFFERED IN BATCHES

Caller: Master Lu, we understand that Little Houses for resolving the clash with Tai Sui Bodhisattva is to be offered in batches of 27.

However, the number of Little Houses recited by some Buddhist friends recently may be rather substantial, therefore, they may not be able to offer all of the Little Houses for resolving the clash with Tai Sui Bodhisattva at one go.

Caller: In this case, can they split the offering of the Little Houses into several batches?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is best to offer it in batches of 7, or even 3.  Both are fine.

Caller: So the 27 Little Houses for resolving the clash with Tai Sui Bodhisattva can be offered in separate rounds, right?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Of course.

Little House to Resolve Predetermined Calamities (化解关劫的小房子)

i. At ages ending with 3, 6 & 9

Wenda20191215  54:09  (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
RESOLVING PREDETERMINED CALAMITIES YEARS AHEAD

Caller: Master mentioned that we could resolve our predetermined calamities at ages ending with ‘3,6,9’ one year in advance through performing recitations.

In that case, what about doing that three years ahead? For instance, can one do so to resolve his predetermined calamities at age 39 as soon as he reaches 36 years old?

Master Jun Hong Lu: You just have to specify the timing when you make your prayer request that, ‘I would like to resolve the predetermined calamities for the specific year’. That’s it.

Master Jun Hong Lu’s Discourse (Question 346) 21 November 2019
RECITATION OF LITTLE HOUSES THAT CORRESPONDS WITH ONE’S AGE

Question: On normal days, is it alright for us to recite batches after batches of Little Houses that corresponds with our age?

Answer: Yes, you may do so. This method is very good.  At times when you feel unwell, when your soul is incomplete, when you suffer from headaches or lethargy, it is best to recite an amount of Little Houses that corresponds with your age in batches.

Answer: In addition, you may also help a distant family member to recite using this method. For example, the other party is 32 years old, you may recite 32 Little Houses for him. You may pray to Bodhisattva to bless him with a safe, peaceful and healthy life wherever he may be

Wenda20190308 12:23(Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
BY ADOPTING ONE’S NORMINAL AGE (虚岁) IN THE YEAR WHEN THEIR AGE ENDS WITH 3, 6 OR 9, WILL IT HELP ONE TO SHUN CALAMITIES?

Caller:  In the year when the last digit of our age ends with a 3, 6 or 9, we would generally mention our nominal age (i.e. based on the traditional Chinese method of reckoning where a person’s age is one year at birth, 虚岁).  For example, at the age of 29, we will tell others that we are 30 years old.  Do you think this is a good way to help us avoid some disasters and calamities?

Master Jun Hong Lu:  Yes.

ii. During Zodiac Year of Birth  (本命年)

Q&A 97. Zodiac year of birth (or Ben Ming Nian)

iii. Before the Year Ends  (年关)

Wenda20161218B  01:00:12 (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
THE PERIOD BEFORE THE YEAR ENDS (年关)

Caller: Master Lu, is it correct that the year ends after the First Day of Lunar New Year? If not, when is the exact time that the year ends?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Logically, it should be when you have passed over it. So, the First Day of Lunar New Year marks the cutoff date. It is considered over after the First Day of Lunar New Year.

Master Jun Hong Lu: However, to be more exact, it should be on the Second Day of Lunar New Year. In other words, it is considered a ‘minor pass’ of the end of the year (小年关) after 12 midnight of the First Day of Lunar New Year. And the ‘major pass’ (大年关) will be after the Fifteenth Day of Lunar New Year.

Caller: So we should be more careful and recite more Little Houses during this period?

Master Lu: Yes, you must take extra precaution.

Wenda20181209A   11:38 (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program) –An Excerpt
OFFERING OF LITTLE HOUSE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR CAN BE UP TO A MAXIMUM OF 21 A DAY

Master Jun Hong Lu: Generally speaking, as we approach the new year, it is best to offer a maximum of 21 Little Houses in a day, and not too many.

Caller: Oh, is there a change that we can now offer a maximum of 21 Little Houses in a day?

Master Jun Hong Lu: No, I mean you may do so before the end of the year, for example, on:

– New Year’s Eve (31st Dec);
– the few days before Lunar New Year (including the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve).

Caller: So how should we state our prayer?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Just be diligent in your cultivation and state that you want to be safe and well.

For an ordinary family, they would pray to their ancestors’ gods for blessings before the end of the year. As for Buddhist practitioners, we would state the following prayer, “May Guan Yin Bodhisattva bless and protect me”, as always in our daily prayers.

Little House Reserved for Future Use (自存小房子)

Q&A 55. RESERVING LITTLE HOUSES FOR FUTURE USE

If you are reserving Little Houses for future use, then before you start reciting the Little House, you can say the following prayer:

“May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva be my witness, I, <your full name>, now recite the scriptures contained in this Little House (the Great Compassion Mantra, the Heart Sutra, the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra, and the Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan).”

Q&A 55. Reserving Little Houses for future use

Q&A Session with Hong Kong Buddhist friends by Master Jun Hong Lu July 5, 2016
WILL KEEPING PLENTIFUL LITTLE HOUSESRESERVED FOR EMERGENCIES AT HOME ATTRACT FOREIGN SPIRITS OR GENERATE NEGATIVE ENERGY?

Question: If there are a lot of Little Houses at home that are reserved for future use in case of an emergency, will this result in negative energy? Will these Little Houses attract foreign spirits?  Please enlighten us, Master Lu.

Answer: No, these won’t attract foreign spirits, because a Little House consists of a combination of sutras and mantras like the Great Compassion Mantra and Heart Sutra, which are very good.  These are for emergency use.  So, not only there will be no negative energy, instead it will generate positive energywhen you keep these Little Houses at home.

Question: Thank you for answering my question, Master Lu.

Wenda20180429B  25:23 (Master Jun Hong Lu’s call-in radio program)
WHICH IS MORE EFFECTIVE, LITTLE HOUSE WITH THE RECIPIENT FIELD FILLED IN OR LITTLE HOUSE RESERVED FOR FUTURE USE?

Caller: Master, is it more effective to fill in the recipient field after completing the Little House Reserved for Future Use or before reciting any Little House? Is there anything that we should take note of?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Certainly. For the Little House Reserved for Future Use that you have completed, if you intend to give it to someone, it will still be loaded with energy even when the recipient field is left blank.

However, if you are reciting the Little House with a particular recipient in mind, the energy will be boosted if you fill in the recipient field beforehand, which will also protect and bless the recipient during your recitation.

The Theory of Twenty Thousand Hours

– Specialising in one skill requires concentration on doing one thing well –  it is a test of your perseverance and persistence

– No matter who you are, if you can practise for 20,000 hours, you can transform yourself from being an ordinary person to being excellent, or even great.

– The same applies to practising Buddhism – break up the hours into everyday practice, to free ourselves of afflictions and help sentient beings.

– So, we must not waste our time!
