Good and Evil in the Human World: Reversing the Nature of Affinities through Prosperity and Adversity

Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door belongs to Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Think about it—where did “Guan Yin Citta” come from? In this Age of Dharma Decline, cultivation is about the mind; it is about the soul. “Citta” connotes the soul of the mind. When your mind makes its peace with something, everything becomes joyful; when your mind can’t get past it, everything becomes a struggle. Isn’t it all just the mind? Some people get scammed out of their money and feel miserable, but then they think, “Hey, maybe I’ll come into some money next month,” and they feel happy again. If they spend the whole day happy, isn’t that a victory for their mind and soul? There was a comedy skit where a couple dreamt they won the lottery, but they ended up in a huge row over how to split the winnings. Even a dream can make you happy for half a day—but because they lacked awakening, they just ended up fighting. If you truly open your mind, isn’t it all just mental activity?

So, I am telling you: understand that in this world, there is no real difference between right and wrong. “Right” is also “wrong,” and “wrong” is also “right.” Take marriage as an example: if you do the right thing, you create a wholesome affinity in the relationship. But if you don’t practise Buddhism, then the moment your negative affinities arise, you will end up divorced anyway. Then the wife might reflect, “I did so much for the family, and now it all feels like a mistake. If I’d known he’d treat me this way, I wouldn’t have done any of it.” But back when you were doing it, didn’t you think it was the right thing? Why do you think you were wrong now?

Take a child who misses out on a place in a selective school or a top-tier class. The mother gets incredibly stressed: “Oh, I’ve done the wrong thing! I wasn’t strict enough.” So she becomes strict, and the child makes it into the top class. Now aren’t you “right”? What is “right” and what is “wrong” in this world? It’s like cooking a dish—if it’s too salty, just eat more rice or add a bit of water. It’s fine. There is no absolute right or wrong. These are just human concepts. The human world is inherently illusory and empty; what is there to argue about? How many “right” and “wrong” things have you done in your life? What you think is right now may only lead to deeper confusion after you die. Many people dote on their children all their lives, only to realise, after their death, that their children were actually karmic creditors from a past life. You might think, “I spent this whole life paying back my debt to them, thinking they were a ‘good person,’ when they were actually a scoundrel.” Is there a right or wrong here? It’s just repaying debts; it’s karma! You are all so silly. You must understand there is no right or wrong. It’s like being in a stadium with tens of thousands of people—who are you? Can you even find yourself in the crowd? All you see is a sea of people. Who is “me”? Who is “you”? Who is “him”? It’s impossible to tell. You think you’re important, but in the vast sea of people, who is truly special in a crowd like that? You can’t find yourself in the crowd, the same way you are lost in samsara, unable to see your inherent nature—your original root.

Mr Zhu, you may think you are quite big on your own, and with Robin, the two of you think you are quite strong. But in a crowd of ten thousand, you are nowhere to be found—there are plenty of people bigger than you two! But it’s not about physical size. I may not be physically strong, but this brain is sharp. This is what matters the most. If your mind is clear and used for propagating the Buddha-dharma, people will naturally be drawn to you. You can lead them out of suffering. With wisdom, you can help the whole world find liberation.

Remember: Without one, the other cannot exist. Everything is equal and without distinction. In a hall of tens of thousands, you can’t distinguish between “me,” “you,” and “him.” Without one, there is no other. Everything is equal and non-dual. You might not fully understand what I am saying yet. Just try to see yourself as a bit less important. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Who are you? You are a single drop of water in the ocean. If you leave the sea, you dry up and vanish instantly. You’re nothing special. So, be sincere in your practice and clear away all karmic obstacles and bad habits.

Practise with total sincerity; everything must be real. When you bow and pray, do it wholeheartedly; when you recite sutras, do it wholeheartedly. There is no room for fakes here; don’t ever think you’ve come here just to put on a show. Remember, you must awaken your original wondrous enlightenment. What is “wondrous enlightenment”? It is the idea that at the beginning of life, human nature is inherently good. A kind-hearted person possesses “wondrous methods” and possesses “enlightenment.” A kind person can see the reality of many things; someone who lacks kindness cannot see the true essence of things.

Understand that wondrous enlightenment is the wondrous Dharma—if you have the method, you can awaken; once you awaken, you will find the method. Everything has two sides. Awakening yourself and awakening others go hand in hand. Furthermore, your awakening must be Ultimate. This means when I realise something, I commit to fully understanding it. For example, I now see clearly: “I have come to this world to endure my suffering, and I understand this to the core. I know I won’t live for many years—just like everyone else—so I choose to cherish this world and this human life. I will dedicate myself to helping others.” This is what it means to reach the ultimate awakening. To go all the way to the end is to reach the ultimate.

So, you must understand these principles and learn to master your emotions. Everything I am telling you is the truth. You must maintain control over your moods; you must be able to hold your ground. If you feel unhappy today, tell yourself, “I shouldn’t be feeling this way.” Once you think it through and understand it clearly, you have reached a state of “ultimate” clarity. If you feel down but then awaken to the truth, you won’t stay unhappy. If you let a bad mood linger, something might go wrong. For example: “I feel my emotions are unstable today; trouble might be just around the corner—I am very worried.” But you must immediately take control: “I’m alright; I have Guan Yin Bodhisattva.” If you are sad, don’t let it overwhelm you. Remind yourself that sad times will pass and there might even be a turning point ahead. Then, the sadness vanishes. That’s how you should regulate your minds. People who “wear their hearts on their sleeves” simply haven’t mastered themselves. Controlling your emotions requires inner cultivation, understanding, clarity, and a sense of the ultimate.

You must learn to release all your frustrations. If things are tense at home, how do you ease that tension? If you’re unhappy at home, go and find a video to watch instead of picking a fight. If you’re unhappy with the food at home, go out for a meal; it won’t cost much. If you can’t contain your emotions because you’re bored of sitting at home every day, go for a walk and look around. Sometimes even window-shopping can make you feel better! You might not be able to afford it, but just looking is a treat for the eyes—it’s a way to regulate your mind. Going to look at the sea is also wonderful, truly. Do you know how the tradition of “clinking glasses” started? At a banquet, your eyes see all the colourful dishes—that’s a treat for the eyes. Your nose smells the wonderful aromas—that’s a treat for the nose. Your mouth tastes the food—that’s a treat for the palate. But the ears were left out; they had nothing to do! So, they started clinking glasses—cling-cling—so the ears could enjoy the feast too. In reality, you must learn to channel your emotions. If you know your mood is heading in a bad direction, you must take control. Learn to guide yourself out of it; don’t get stuck in a “mental rut.” Release all your frustrations. In your daily life, do not let your emotions dictate who you are. Finally, use the power of the Buddha-Dharma to guide and bless yourself, and you will find liberation.

The blessings of the Buddha-Dharma come in both favourable and adverse forms. Have you heard this before? When things are going well, the Bodhisattvas bless you, and your situation continues to improve. But even when you’re in hardship, their blessings still flow—gradually transforming your circumstances for the better. In reality, there are two types of blessings. When all is going smoothly, you feel joyful—Bodhisattvas shine the light of wisdom on you, and that joy grows. But when things go awry and you turn to the Bodhisattvas for help, their blessings work slowly, gently shifting your situation. In both good times and bad, their support is there.

Therefore, if you encounter “reversing the nature of affinities” (this is a term Guan Yin Bodhisattva shared with me while I was preparing the outline of my Dharma talk), it means turning around the “reverse” things—the negative and contrary elements of your life. What is an “affinity”? It represents the karmic conditions of our lives. It might start as something negative, but you turn it around until it becomes a “favourable affinity”—the kind found in the term “going along with conditions.” These affinities carry their own nature, their inherent qualities. For example, a positive affinity may last three to five years; a negative one may also run its course in three to five years, then change. That’s the nature of affinities. If you are facing a negative affinity, just persevere; it will pass in a few years. If you recite sutras, perhaps it will pass in just a year or two. If you dedicate yourself to performing meritorious deeds and performing life liberation, the negative conditions might vanish entirely. This is what it means to “reverse the nature of affinities.”

Learn to shift your state of mind. One moment you’re upset, and the next, you’re smiling again. Have you ever noticed how someone can go from frowning to laughing in an instant? What happened? They shifted their mindset. By shifting your perspective and thinking things through, you have successfully reversed the nature of that affinity. When you follow wholesome thoughts and go along with your conditions, you tap into your “wholesome nature.” When things are truly miserable at home, it’s hard to ask someone to laugh—they are in pain. But if you can find a way to laugh shortly after, you are someone who knows how to let go; you have mastered the method of reversing the nature of affinities. If you’ve just had an intense argument and chairs have been thrown, can you laugh? It might be a bitter smile, but you smile because you realise that this is just the nature of human life. Transformation means exercising self-restraint. Transformation means seeing right through the “inferior roots” of human nature—only then can you truly laugh. If you can’t see through it, you won’t laugh, and you won’t be able to turn things around and find peace. So, when things are going well, don’t get too carried away; when you face adversity, don’t be too distressed. When times are bad, don’t let it break you; when times are good, don’t let it go to your head. Some people think “the world was made for me” when they are successful, yet feel “there is no way out” and fall into despair when they fail. It’s all about your perspective—like looking at ants: when you crouch down, you see a whole colony, but when you stand up, you can’t even see a single ant on the ground.

Use good thoughts, good intentions, and good actions to overcome negative thoughts, negative intentions, and unwholesome behaviour. Only then can you truly become a cultivator capable of transforming your destiny. If you can ultimately ascend to the higher spiritual realms, it means you have successfully transformed your destiny. Only by climbing higher can you see further; only with wisdom can you overcome obstacles. Alright, I will leave it there for today.
