Arising and Ceasing Lead to Change; Cause and Effect Lead to the Cycle of Rebirth

Let me continue: when you feel yourself on the verge of anger, the first thing you must do is meet it with silence—simply remain quiet. Use silence to restrain yourself, and whatever you do, do not speak. When you speak while angry, the words that come out do not reflect your true nature; they will inevitably hurt others and hurt you, too. “Words spoken in anger have no weight; they are reckless and irrational, and you are guaranteed to regret saying them.

Think of it like a driver who has completely lost their way—whichever direction they choose to drive will be wrong. When someone loses their temper, whatever they say is bound to be wrong because they are no longer speaking with reason. At that moment, they really have nothing constructive to say. So, when you are angry, do not say a word; just stay quiet. A driver who can’t find their way will make a wrong turn here and a wrong turn there. Because they have no idea where they are going, they drive around in circles, get more lost, and end up even angrier. It is far better to simply pull over and think it through. Even without a map, sitting there and retracing your steps in your mind is infinitely better than driving around aimlessly.

When you’re about to lose your temper, choose not to speak. Remaining quiet is always better than lashing out with reckless words that will only wound people. When anger flares up, stay calm. Reflect on the situation, and it will pass. Think ahead. I am teaching you how to handle life here. What does it mean to think ahead? When you are upset, stop and think: “Never mind, it’ll probably all blow over in a few days. It’s already happened anyway, so it’s no big deal. In a couple of days, hopefully, they will understand me.” Many people feel a situation is insurmountable in the heat of the moment, but the moment they think ahead and find a potential solution, the issue resolves itself. For example, if a teacher scolds you today, what should you do? Think ahead: “In a few days, I can write the teacher a note, or maybe I can ask a friend to clear the air for me, or I can do this and that…” Once you come up with a few options, the knot in your heart unties, and you will no longer carry that burden inside you. Do you understand? I am teaching you vital life skills. If you can’t even handle being a decent human being, how can you expect to learn Buddhism well? Sometimes, just by thinking ahead, a problem simply vanishes.

Think about your age—we all have to leave this world one day anyway. Why bother being angry? Just let it go. Tell yourself, “I’ve been deceived countless times in my life; what’s one more time? So be it.” Have none of you ever been deceived? Have you never deceived anyone? Is that even possible? At home, your husband has tricked you your whole life, and you’ve done the same to him. Think about how many secrets you keep from him, the times you’ve plotted against him, and he’s plotted against you—it’s all just mutual deception. When someone else tricks you, you feel heartbroken and utterly miserable. But when you trick someone else, you think to yourself, “Let him deal with it, I’m not saying a word.” Isn’t that true? Even with the person you love most, the moment you get into a fight, you will still look for ways to play tricks on them. This is simply human nature. It’s exactly like that between husbands and wives. Say a husband has just had a massive row with his wife, and she makes him a boiling hot bowl of soup. If things were good between them, she’d warn him, “Careful, it’s hot—sip it slowly,” because she knows he tends to just pick up the bowl and gulp it down. But this time, she stays quiet. He takes a huge gulp and it burns him terribly. Then she stands next to him saying, “Oh dear, you’re always so impatient! Who told you to rush like that?” all the while thinking to herself: “Idiot! That’s what you get for arguing with me earlier. Serves you right!”

We human beings must overcome these inner hurdles—these twisted, malicious thoughts—and grow through the process. You must conquer this negative mindset. If you are a true cultivator, even when others treat you poorly, you will still treat them with kindness. This is called repaying malice with virtue. Never do the opposite and repay virtue with malice. Unfortunately, people nowadays do exactly that—someone treats them well, and they still treat them poorly in return. That is repaying virtue with malice.

In everything you do, you must think and act for the benefit of everyone. This means that before you do anything, you should consider if it aligns with what others are doing. For example, if everyone wants to learn Buddhism, you should do your best to help them learn. It is the same simple principle at home: if all three people in your family love a certain dish, you cook that dish more often. Because everyone shares that preference, your action is correct. Furthermore, I want to tell you: do not think or act based purely on your own desires. A Bodhisattva never thinks or acts based on personal self-interest; a Bodhisattva would never say, “This is what I want to do, so you must all follow me.” Instead, a Bodhisattva takes the hearts of sentient beings as their own heart. Whatever you, the sentient beings, hope to achieve, that is what the Bodhisattva will do to help you. When you pray to Guan Yin Bodhisattva because you want to live a slightly better life in this human world, doesn’t Guan Yin Bodhisattva help make everything go smoothly for you?

Just recently, someone who only just started practising Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door found out his sister is pregnant. She had been unable to conceive for eight years—this is no joke. If someone can’t have a child for that many years, there is usually very little hope; they just won’t have children. But look at her now—she’s pregnant. Why did this happen? It’s very simple: the Bodhisattva always treats your needs as her own pursuit. Because whatever you need, the Bodhisattva will provide. It’s just like running a business. Why do some businesses do so well? It is because they serve their customers exactly what they need—that is the only way to succeed. The underlying logic is identical. If your customers don’t need a certain product, you won’t try to sell it. Likewise, whatever sentient beings need, the Bodhisattvas help them with. Isn’t this what is meant by “responding to every prayer”? Therefore, I tell you: as long as you constantly think for others—matching your needs to their needs—you will become one in mind with the Buddha, and your heart will be united with the Bodhisattva’s. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas truly take the mind of the public as their own.

Every physical object in this universe goes through arising and ceasing. On the surface, something may exist today and vanish a few days later; this is what it means to arise and cease, and it must ultimately return to emptiness. In other words, even though physical matter forms and dissolves, in the end, it completely disappears.

Take a simple example: in the past, our televisions looked like giant, blocky boxes. Over time, televisions gradually became thinner, and now even slimmer models have come out. It’s just like the evolution of computers—a computer used to be as massive as an old TV, but now they are incredibly slim. All physical matter goes through arising and ceasing; it is in a constant state of change and transition. But you must understand that in the end, absolutely nothing remains. For human beings, when you die, you have nothing left. As for those old TVs, do those massive, boxy units even exist anymore? Who would still keep a giant TV like that in their living room today? If you threw one out on the street, no one would even pick it up. This is what we call progress, and this is what it means to arise and cease. Eventually, that kind of TV is phased out and disappears—it essentially becomes empty.

Think about the clothes you used to wear; do you still have them? When you were little, there were certain clothes you loved to bits. You wore them every single day, washing and ironing them constantly. But in the end, do those clothes still exist? Haven’t they become empty? Therefore, every physical thing in this world ultimately returns to emptiness. Although it is here today and gone tomorrow, in the long run, nothing remains. It is like a dream. This is why the Buddha-dharma describes all matters as “like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, and a shadow.” They are here today, gone tomorrow.

Let me continue: it is only through practising the Buddha-dharma that you can achieve a state of neither arising nor ceasing. A true Buddhist practitioner views things with a mind that neither arises nor ceases. In other words, you understand that everything you do today never perishes. That is why I have always told you: only those who look far ahead can truly take things lightly.

You should keep your mind free of burdens and attachments. Once something has passed, let it pass. What does it mean to be “without attachment”? It means you adopt an attitude of “it’s no big deal—what does it matter?” If you’ve been deceived, then so be it. If something is sold, it’s sold. If a child is born, they’re born. If someone dies, they die… this is neither arising nor ceasing. Today, an earthquake hits Turkey and nearly five hundred people die; right now, Bangkok is flooded. What can you do about it? Humanity creates its own karma and therefore receives its own karmic retribution. For instance, if a person neglects their diet over a long period, their stomach is bound to fail. That is simply the result of long-term negative habits bringing about their own retribution. If you neglect your body for years, you will age very quickly. And when old age comes, can you refuse to accept it? Old is old, losing your looks is losing your looks, having no money is having no money, and becoming a bit forgetful is becoming a bit forgetful—what does it matter? Of course, we can hope to age a bit slower, to slow down the forgetfulness, and have everything deteriorate a bit more gradually. Although we cannot completely stop the process, we can certainly slow it down.

Think of it this way: your battered old car can barely run anymore. The year you were born dictates the model of the car you are. If you were born in 1942, you are a 1942 vintage car. To have driven all the way into this modern era and still be out on the road is already quite an achievement. You need to maintain it better—change the oil more often, replace the tyres regularly, and drive it less. Only then can your old car keep up with traffic. Otherwise, I’m sorry, but it’s time for the scrap heap. At this stage in life, with these old bones, what are you still competing with others for? You see a sports car on the road and think, “What’s the big deal? I can drive fast too.” You stomp on the accelerator, your car goes clunk, clunk, clunk and breaks down, while they fly past you. If others are rich and I am not, I don’t care; I live very happily. If others are famous and I am not, it doesn’t matter; I live very comfortably. Whatever others have means nothing to me. Instead, think about the things you possess that are better than theirs. I have a higher spiritual state—do you? I have joy—do you? I have attained what I truly sought in life—can you say the same? Even with all your money, you still can’t get it, and you live with constant vexations. You might have beauty, but no one wants you; I might not be good-looking, but I am still cherished. That is the difference. Chasing after things you cannot obtain will only bring you vexation and suffering.

If you pursue something too fiercely and pour your entire heart into it, you pave the way for massive disappointment. If our minds are free of burdens and attachments—meaning we do not allow our minds to obsess over many things—we will see into our true nature. Once the mind becomes clear and empty of clutter, it naturally becomes pure. To be free of burdens and attachments allows you to see your true nature and attain the fruit of Buddhahood. What is the fruit of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas? It is noble, pure, and completely flawless. When your mind is immaculate and free from vexations, the spiritual fruit you obtain is perfectly clean.

Therefore, you must see through life and death. Seeing through life and death means you should not take them too heavily. However, cherishing life does not mean I haven’t seen through it. Because I know that life is valuable and highly precious—that it is not easy to obtain this human body—we must use this temporary body to cultivate our true nature. If you already know your health is poor, yet you continue to abuse your body, aren’t you just making life hard for yourself? If you know your life is fragile, yet you still insist on racing motorbikes, smoking, and drinking—think about it, aren’t you just ruining yourself? If you know you can’t resist the temptation of gambling, yet you say, “I just have to gamble,” the inevitable result is financial ruin.

This is why I tell you to realise and awaken to the importance of spiritual cultivation. What does it mean to realise and awaken? It means to understand and awaken to the true reality of things. What is that true reality? It is the truth of our innate nature. And what is that truth of our innate nature? It’s our kindness. The fundamental nature of a human being is kind, and in everything we do, we must act with kindness.

Cause and effect lead to the cycle of rebirth. The law of cause and effect is incredibly powerful; if a person is bound to reincarnate, it is entirely due to the cause and effect they created themselves. Whatever seeds they plant, they will harvest as fruits. It is precisely because they have planted so many karmic seeds that the resulting fruits force them back into the cycle of rebirth.

For example, if someone insults you and even curses your ancestors, and you simply cannot hold back—so you hit them, and end up killing them—the fruit of your action is execution. In your next life, you will fall back into the cycle of reincarnation, and you might not even be able to be reborn as a human being. This is samsara. Even if you do a good deed today and receive a positive reward, that too is a form of samsara. You feel delighted, uplifted, almost as though your spirit has risen to heaven. For instance, when you help others and do a wholesome deed, aren’t you happy? Mr Zhu went to a meeting today and resolved many issues for me. When he came back, he was overjoyed. He was resolving problems for our radio station and for everyone. In doing so, his spiritual level was elevated. But if you get into an argument today, trading insults and blows until a major incident occurs, look at what happens: you immediately plunge yourself into the Ghost Realm. This happens because you started plotting underhanded schemes: “What should I do? I’ll fight him in secret, I’ll play a trick on him…” Just like that, your dark side is fully revealed, and you enter the Underworld to face punishment. This is what is meant by cause and effect leading to the cycle of rebirth.
