Embodying the All-Encompassing Wisdom and Compassion of the Bodhisattva

We continue our Dharma talk today. Many people learn Buddhism, pay respects to the Buddhas, and recite sutras, yet even now they still do not truly understand what a Buddha actually is. In reality, a Buddha is someone of an extremely high spiritual state, a being of great wisdom—unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. If we explain it in everyday terms, what is a Buddha? A Buddha is a person whose rationality, emotions, and abilities have all simultaneously reached the most perfect and complete state. In other words, when we say someone in the human world is a Buddha, it means this person has practised Buddhism exceptionally well. Their rationality, their emotions, and their abilities have all reached ultimate perfection at the same time. Such a person has the absolute capacity to govern their reason and emotions. They possess the power to navigate all worldly matters and objects while having already transcended human afflictions. No matter what happens in the world, they have the capacity to handle it. For example, if trouble arises in the family, they have the means to resolve it. If their own life is reaching its end, they have the means to transcend it. Regardless of the circumstances, they possess a form of superhuman wisdom. When relationship issues arise at home, they can control their emotions; their reason never loses control. Everything is complete and perfect.

So what does “perfection” actually mean? Perfection means that your rationality and your emotions are able to resolve the problem. That is called perfection. If you have rational understanding but the problem is still not resolved, then it is not perfection. For instance, you are about to lose your temper, but you tell yourself, “I must not lose my temper today,” and you endure it without arguing. On the surface, it seems you have emotional restraint. But in reality, the problem has not truly been resolved. This means you have not yet reached perfection or completeness. It is not thorough. You may have wisdom, but it is not ultimate—you cannot fully transcend the situation. You may have emotions, but you cannot fully control them. You may have abilities, but you do not truly understand them in depth. Over your entire life, across every hour of the day, how strong is your ability really?

Only a Buddha reaches ultimate perfection. What does “ultimate” mean? It means reaching the very end—only then can it be called perfection. The issue is completely resolved, once and for all. And this perfection is expressed through character, or personality. If a Buddha manifested in this world, they still have a physical body, and therefore possess a transcendent ‘personality’. This personality is vital because it transcends the ordinary human level. Because they are still among us and have not yet entered nirvana, we still refer to this as their ‘character’ or ‘personality’—yet, in truth, they are already a Buddha in the human world. Therefore, when we emulate the Buddha’s manner, his spiritual state, and his ultimate perfection—when we strive for that superhuman personality where emotion, reason, and ability are perfectly balanced—we are, in fact, becoming Buddhas ourselves.

Buddhas and Bodhisattvas possess great wisdom. What is great wisdom? It is profound, extraordinary wisdom. And what is great compassion? It is deep, boundless compassion. When a person has compassion, it means their inherent nature is very kind. A person who possesses compassion will never lack wisdom. Why? Because when you feel compassion for someone, you will not act irrationally or lose control. It is only when you hate others that you behave in extreme and irrational ways. Hatred arises because there is no compassion. When your heart is constantly filled with hatred, jealousy, greed, anger, and delusion, this ignorance prevents compassion from arising. What is delusion? Delusion means not understanding a matter clearly, yet insisting on acting upon it anyway. That is delusion. A truly compassionate person is merciful and forgiving. A person with compassion will not be deluded. Let me give you a simple example. People who buy lottery tickets obsessively—are they deluded? Yes, they are. A person who insists on taking revenge whenever they are hurt—are they deluded? They are. But where does this delusion come from? It comes from a mindset of revenge: “You bullied me, so I must retaliate.” Such a person has no compassion and does not understand the law of cause and effect.

A compassionate person will not fall into delusion, nor will they harbour hatred. A compassionate person will also not be greedy. Greed and compassion cannot coexist. For instance, a greedy person might think, ‘I am doing well, but I want to be even better.’ Consider your child who might not pass the entrance exam for a selective school next year—if you have compassion for that child, you will recognise their strengths and weaknesses. You might know they struggle with maths but are gifted in literature. A child’s intellectual leaning is often clear long before high school. How could you use compassion to give rise to a state of non-greed? You can think of the child’s struggles; you see how hard they have worked and realise that even with that effort, they might not reach a certain goal. When you accept that some things are beyond your control, you stop being greedy for a specific result. This is the working of compassion.

Bodhisattvas embody all-encompassing wisdom and all-encompassing compassion. This means their wisdom is whole and harmoniously integrated, and their compassionate heart and wise mind are also complete. Moreover, Buddhas are beings of great capability. What does “great capability” mean? It means being capable of accomplishing anything. You may not yet understand what great capability truly is. Let me give you an example. Right now, you may have the ability to do many things, but that does not mean you possess great capability. For instance, if you fall ill, you have the ability to see a doctor and take medicine. You do have that ability—but do you have the ability to make the illness completely disappear? When a difficult situation arises unexpectedly and you can instantly come up with many solutions that completely resolve all your worldly troubles, that is great wisdom; that is great capability.

Consider a common scenario at work: your boss is unhappy with you. Perhaps he walks in and sees you doing something else, even though you were actually doing it for his benefit. You feel you cannot explain yourself without sounding like you’re making excuses. Do you have the ability to resolve this misunderstanding? These situations are everywhere—misunderstandings from your boss, your spouse, or your children. Some things feel impossible to say; speaking up might feel like losing face. How do you explain yourself then? What kind of wisdom do you use? If you can resolve such a situation perfectly and harmoniously, that is great capability.

I do not set impossible standards for you, but you must strive to achieve what currently feels beyond your reach. Without that effort, how can you develop great capability? This is a spiritual intelligence that transcends ordinary human capacity. It is a “sixth sense” that develops through Buddhist practice. By cultivating your mind, you master a form of superhuman brainwave and thought frequency. You can let another person perceive your intentions without needing to speak constantly. This is a result of your spiritual practice. Eventually, your mind generates a “thought intelligence”—a message of wisdom that allows others to know your intention. That is the true harmony of wisdom.

Do you think practising Buddhism is that easy? Do you think that after making a mistake, a gesture or a few words are enough to resolve it? When people feel misunderstood, their first instinct is to rush to their boss to explain. Perhaps, instead of speaking immediately, you wait for the right moment, or use a letter, or a subtle gesture to show, “I wasn’t doing this for myself.” But these are merely minor human tricks—they do not truly help others understand. So what would Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do? When you have cultivated to a certain level, your mind becomes incredibly clean. The moment your intention arises, the other person can receive it. This is “virtuous capability.” Do you think worldly methods can be called “virtuous capability” or achieve such perfection? Can you achieve this? I can make someone understand me instantly; I can let them know exactly what I am thinking and that I have their best interests at heart. Even when I discipline them, they can feel the kindness behind it. Don’t you all feel this too? That is power; that is energy. Why is it that after I point something out to you, you often want me to say a few more words? If I stop, you might even feel that something isn’t right. This is the energy that allows people to understand and accept you. This virtuous capability is an all-encompassing, perfectly harmonious “dark matter.”

Why is it so perfect? Because it is transmitted to your mind via the Heavens. Anything that passes through the Heavens must be extremely pure, because impurity cannot ascend from the mind to the Heavens. Only clean information transmitted through this “broadcasting station” can be received by others. But if you want your message to reach that station, your information must first be pure—free from magnetic interference—so that others can sense it clearly. If what you transmit is impure—dirty thoughts and contaminated intentions—others cannot receive your message at all. They simply cannot pick it up. We all want to learn from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas well, but when it comes to truly practising it, we are still very far off.

When people don’t understand you—when your children or spouse misunderstand you—it is all because the information you transmit is impure. You are unable to let others accept you; you are unable to let them understand what you are really thinking. The information you send out is already distorted. Forget the mental transmission of information—just look at how couples speak to each other. You try to explain yourself to your husband, and the moment he hears your words, he slams the table and explodes. He cannot even understand what you are saying verbally—how could you expect him to understand your intention first through the mind? Think about it—how difficult is that? That is why people often say, “That’s not what I meant!” But the misunderstanding has already taken root. It is the same with children. Don’t you all have mouths? Don’t you all know how to speak? Then why does speaking so often lead to arguments? Why are your opinions so often rejected? In the end, you hear, “Why are you like this?” After decades, you are still like this. Can your mouth really explain things clearly?

Why does this happen? It’s because the information in your mind is flawed; you lack great wisdom and great capability. Your words become a “stimulus” to the other person that defies logic. In electrical terms, we call this a pulse. If your pulse is out of sync with theirs, you will clash. And that’s why couples argue. Romantic relationships are the same. When emotional pulses no longer align, even a single sentence—or even a sneeze—can cause a fight: “Why do you have to sneeze just as I’m talking?”

In contrast, a Bodhisattva possesses great wisdom. Every thought that enters their mind is harmonised; whatever they express will never harm another person; it is always clean and pure. This is what it means to possess complete wisdom, complete compassion, and great spiritual intelligence. In fact, Bodhisattvas are called “Enlightened Ones.” An enlightened person never nitpicks or haggles over trifles. This is why when you disciples talk to me, I often say: “Don’t explain; learn the art of not explaining.” If you are wrong, then you are wrong—so what is there to explain? Think about how a person looks when they are desperately trying to explain themselves—they often can’t even get the words out clearly. The moment you explain, you are already admitting errors. You have already lost that transcendent ability; you are showing you have no other way to resolve the issue. Conversely, silence can be more powerful than speech. If you do not explain, the other person may cool down and reflect on whether they were the one in the wrong.
