Introduction to Daily Recitation for Beginners


STEP 1

Recite Dharani To Purify Karma from Speech (7 times)


STEP 2

Offer incense to the Bodhisattva. If you do not have one, then you may offer Heart Incense.

(Please refer to the video demonstration above – “Introduction to Daily Recitation for Beginners” in offering the Heart Incense.)


STEP 3

Deepest gratitude to The Greatly Merciful Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva (3 times)

I, XXX(Your Full Name) hereby pay my respect to the Greatly Merciful Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva.


STEP 4

The Great Compassion Mantra, the Heart Sutra and the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance need to be recited daily as they are the three pillars of the Daily Recitation. Generally, the Daily Recitation starts with the Great Compassion Mantra. As for the rest of the sutras and mantras, there is no hard and fast rule on the sequence of recitation.


The Great Compassion Mantra (Da Bei Zhou) (3, 7, 9, 11…49 times)

Before reciting the Great Compassion Mantra, you may make the following prayer request:

May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva bless me <your full name>, grant me good health and strengthen my spiritual power.

Beginners may recite the Great Compassion Mantra three to seven times daily.

The Heart Sutra (Xin Jing) (3, 7, 9, 11…49 times)

(Avoid reciting the Heart Sutra after 10pm and during extreme weather, such as heavy rain, thunderstorms, or lightning.)

Before you recite the Heart Sutra, you may make the following prayer request:

May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me <your full name>, grant me wisdom, calmness,  a pure mind, and relieve me of afflictions.

Beginners may recite the Heart Sutra three to seven times daily.

The Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance (1, 2, 3…5 times)

(Avoid reciting the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance after 10pm)

Before you recite the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance , you may make the following prayer request:

May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me <your full name>, help me to repent and eliminate the karmic obstacles due to negative karma, grant me good health and wisdom.

Beginners may recite the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance once or up to seven times daily.

STEP 5

The three sutras and mantras mentioned above form the basic Daily Recitation.

Next, comes the short sutras and mantras which beginners may choose to recite for 21, 27 or 49 times each daily.


The Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra (Wang Sheng Zhou) Generally recommended for beginners

(Avoid reciting the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra after 10pm and during extreme weather, such as heavy rain, thunderstorms, or lightning.)

Before you recite the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra, you may make the following prayer request:

May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me <your full name>, help the spirits of the deceased, whose death my actions caused, ascend to a higher spiritual realm, and help me to eliminate karmic obstacles

The Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots

Before you recite the Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots, you may make the following prayer request:

May the Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva protect and bless me <your full name>, help me resolve my negative karmic affinity with <the other party’s full name>.

(Here you may mention ‘others’ generally or specific name of your relative, friend, or colleague.)

STEP 6

When you complete your Daily Recitation as above, recite three to seven times of the Dharani to Patch Flaws in Recitation and Qi Fo Mie Zui Zhen Yan.
