Caller: It’s a common practice for people to give alcohol or cigarettes as a gift for Lunar New Year. For Buddhist practitioners like us who observe the Five Precepts, is it appropriate to give alcohol as a gift?
Master Lu: When you give alcohol as a gift to others, you must not think “I am giving him this alcohol because I know he is a drinker”. If such a thought does not arise, your intent will be kept in check. That said, it is best not to give alcohol as a gift.
