BUDDHIST PRACTITIONERS NEED TO BE ALTRUISTIC

Master Jun Hong Lu: Some people only cultivate themselves on the exterior, not on the interior. In the end, they neglect their inner cultivation altogether.

What does this mean? They only know how to put up a pretence of practising the dharma and do not make genuine effort to cultivate themselves.

In consequence, they become haughty and arrogant. They are conceited because they fail to understand the mark of a true spiritual cultivator is one who is dedicated to cultivating their inner being.

It is pointless, if you are good at talking and theoretical rhetoric; reciting the scriptures and performing virtuous deeds just to show off to others; and performing kind deeds while thinking of tangible returns. Once these thoughts arise, all your effort, be it on the surface or on the interior, will go to waste.
