IF WE SNEEZE WHILE RECITING THE BUDDHIST SCRIPTURE, SHOULD WE START THE RECITATION ALL OVER AGAIN?

Caller: A Buddhist friend is asking if we happen to sneeze while performing recitation, do we have to start all over again?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is best to continue reciting from the previous sentence where you left off.

Caller: Just to patch up?

Master Jun Hong Lu: It is unpleasant to the ear. For example, your name is ‘Zhou Xiang Xiang’, if I call you ‘Zhou — Xiang — achoo –‘, do you think this is respectful? Under such circumstances, we should readdress the full name, ‘Zhou Xiang Xiang’. Therefore, it is alright to continue the recitation from the previous line.

Caller: This is also subject to whether we could remember where we left off before the interruption, otherwise we would have to start the recitation all over again, wouldn’t we?

Master Jun Hong Lu: Exactly, start all over again. For short mantras, you must redo from scratch; for longer Buddhist scriptures, you may use your discretion under such circumstances.

Caller: That’s true.
