WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN FACED WITH VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE NOT OBLIGING?
Caller: While carrying out our volunteer work at the Guan Yin Hall, sometimes we encounter fellow volunteers who are unwilling to take our advice—even after we explain that certain actions, like wasting resources or being a negative influence to other Buddhist friends, which are all against the teachings. Unfortunately, these volunteers seem to remain insistent on their ways.
If we point out their mistakes or assign their tasks to somebody else, they will get upset either way. Master, could you please guide us on how to advise them because we do not wish to end their spiritual life?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Just ignore them for the time being. Why waste your energy? Just let such negative people be. After all, they shall bear their own karmic obstacles. When they come to their senses, then speak to them again.
This is the problem in the world—all of you worry too much about trivial matters. This explains why your spiritual cultivation remains subpar.
Caller: Sorry, Master.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Herein lies the common problem that everyone faces: We care too much about how other people see and say about us. With that, how are you going to survive in this world?
Caller: Master, you are so right. So, what’s the right approach to address this matter? Am I right to say that if the volunteer is likely to get upset over what we say, we should refrain from approaching him for the time being?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Exactly! Just cast aside whoever is unhappy! There is simply nothing much that you can do.
Caller: We are just worried that our action may break their spiritual life.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Do you think that is possible? For those who have it, nothing that you do will cut it off. As for those who don’t, it is already broken no matter how much you worry about it. Do you understand what I’m saying?
Caller: Yes, I do. Thank you.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Those who have wisdom will figure things out on their own. On the flip side, those without it—you won’t be able to pull them along no matter how hard you try.
