Caller: How can we connect with others—understanding what they think and what they need? I want others to feel that I truly understand them. What should I do?
Master Jun Hong Lu: Let me teach you the best method. First, you must listen attentively when others speak in order for you to understand what is in their mind. But, with a personality like yours, you are always so eager to speak, you will never truly understand others. If you want to understand others, you must first listen attentively. Only by doing so can you truly understand who they are.
Being around your Master, your wisdom will keep growing; being around people filled with hate will only deepen your hatred. If you surround yourself with foolish or ignorant people, you will become ignorant too. If you stick around with petty people, you will become increasingly narrow-minded.
First, learn to be with those who are wise. Some people lack wisdom in choosing their friends. What is the point of making friends with such a character? Would you want to mingle with those who are fond of criticising others? If you do, their negative traits will rub off on you and you will become an object of disdain. So, you should refrain from befriending those people who always talk bad about others. If you find someone is becoming unbearably annoying in recent periods, just reduce your interaction with him.
