HOW DO WE DETERMINE IF WE CAN MAKE THE VOW TO SUCCEED IN OUR CULTIVATION WITHIN THIS LIFETIME?
Caller: Master mentioned before that the ripening of negative karma will take place at an accelerated pace within five years after making the vow to succeed in cultivation within this lifetime.
Some Buddhist practitioners are worried that their negative karma is so hefty that they are unable to bear the brunt of the said ripening of negative karma should they make such a vow. In that case, master, how do we determine if we can make such a vow, based on the ratio of our karmic obstacles?
Master Jun Hong Lu: You have to be pure physically and mentally, and you are not much afflicted with anything in your everyday life, as those who can succeed in their cultivation within this lifetime are less likely to feel troubled throughout their lifetime. As for someone like you who is swamped with troubles every day, do you think you are able to realise this vow?
Caller: That’s right, it’s impossible.
Master Jun Hong Lu: Now you got it.
Caller: Is there a specific ratio to it?
Master Jun Hong Lu: No, it depends on individual’s negative karma.
