(Question 42)
GUIDELINES FOR PERFORMING LIBERATION OF CAPTIVE LIVES ON BEHALF OF OTHERS
Question: Will a person succumb to any trouble when he contributes money to an ill person for their performance of liberations of captive lives?
Answer: If the money has been donated to said person, then it will not cause them any trouble. However, should they perform the liberation of captive lives on the person’s behalf, then it will be a totally different scenario. The minute they pass the money to the other party, it has nothing to do with them anymore. On the contrary, should they use the money and say, “Let me perform the liberation of captive lives on your behalf,” in this case, they will inevitably shoulder some karmic consequences.
Question: May I know what we should observe when performing the liberation of captive lives on others’ behalf?
Answer: This act will cause the shouldering of a certain amount of karmic consequences. The only thing that can be done is to say “Greatly Merciful and Greatly Compassionate Guan Yin Bodhisattva, today I will be performing the liberation of captive lives on behalf of XXX. It is not my intention to shoulder their karmic debts, may they be made responsible for the repayment of their own karmic debts and they will recite Little Houses. I am only here to help them perform the liberation of captive lives so as to allow them to prolong their life upon repayment of their karmic debts. May Guan Yin Bodhisattva have mercy on me.”
Without making this clear, the above may cause a person some trouble. After all, to help others is never an easy endeavour.
